PLEASE DON'T UPLOAD WITHOUT WAD AUTHOR'S PERMISSION!
People on the doomworld forums are furious.

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/146899-classic-doom-new-update-on-steam/?page=16

Uploading without the author's permission is against the author's TOS... I expect ID to crack down on unauthorized uploads pretty soon.

Suppose someone released a map in 2004, then later released more maps or whole mappack (or contributed to megawad for a team), using same map but reworked and tweaked things in it, perhaps retexturing etc. and considering the map "definitive" in, let's say, 2014.

now comes 2024 and somebody sees said map from 2004 and not from 2014, now would the author have the right to be upset?

As a former mod author I couldn't care less what you do with my old mods. Hell, I'd be happy someone was playing them.

I mean if it's an old wad from 90s or early 2000s and author(s) gave up on doom long time ago then it should be fine, I guess???
But if it's a fairly recent wad and authors are still active in modding scene then that's a no no in my book

Not quite, they simply seem annoyed by it.

And if they where annoyed of some people maybe buying these to play their mod, then what would they prefer ? To play mods with pirate versions perhaps ?

Then someone should upload the newer version ? With the modders permission though.

This has nothing to do with what is currently going on and is completely different.

Read the EULA of the tool you used and you probably don't own the mods in the 1st place

Depends, it's still illegal to take someone else's work and post it somewhere else if you don't have a license or permission to distribute it until copyright expires, even if they are dead.

The closest I could think of by your example is the counter strike games. The CS games have thousands of custom maps some even modified from already existing maps yet I don't see people being upset about this so I don't think why someone should be upset about some slightly modified Doom maps or TCs even if they were uploaded to KEX Doom. That's like saying SgtMark4 should be upset about Project Brutality using Brutal Doom code.
GamerXT 11 AGO 2024 a las 6:12
Even if modders say "don't reupload without permission", it isn't like they're being sold.

I agree that people should ask the authors first though, even if it shouldn't matter.

This thread is a great resource in further learning how awful the PC gaming community is.

We all love modders, we just don't respect them I guess? At least ask them before you upload it, it's the bare minimum.
GamerXT 11 AGO 2024 a las 6:21
Yes they should be asked, yet what if they say no because they're simply a fan of Doomworld and think Microsoft destroyed their house ? Is that a good reason to say no ? 🤨

Yes. They own their work so all reasons are good reasons. Do you think disagreeing with why someone exercises their rights is a good reason to infringe on them?

Personally I'd respect their wish and just play their wad the old-fashioned way.
Which is still an option I think we all need to be reminded of.

Of course there's still the console players, but considering they're new to the whole modded scene, there's tons for them to get to before being concerned with what is and isn't available.

well, i have no horse in this race, so to speak, i simply try to rationalize and understand in what case it isn't just black or white.
