I put gzdoom, its files, and the wads in both the base folder and the dosbox folder and renamed gzdoom to dosbox.exe and it works for me.
Forgot i did it in both folders
Be sure to run the dos version of the game

It's a bit tricky, but it can be done.

I had my Ultimate DOOM + Sigil + Sigil II previously set on the classic DOS launcher.

You have to delete everything from the dosbox folder. Paste all your GZDoom files and wads and rename GZDoom to Launcher.exe. That way you can launch GZDoom through the classic DOS launcher option on Steam.

Just one thing, if you have launch options on the properties of the game, you will break the gameplay of the newer release. You should have the launch options only when you play with GZDoom.

I'll have to try it out but thank you brother

Also perhaps select GZDoom's autoload option, since Steam may not like GZD's menu being used.

The autoload option shall always read the first files that are highlighted and moved to GZD, while moving a different file resets it I think

And you probably know this, yet if using mods like for music, highlight this last, as the highlighting order determines the load order.

I'm kinda a more on. Where would auto load be? I don't think I've ever used it.

Just tried it out. Deleting everything and renaming it to launcher.exe for some reason auto redownloads all the og dos files.

In the .ini file
Look for [global.autoload]
Under that put each wad/pk3 on its own line preceeded by path=

The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

I guess adding the WADs to the .ini file, rather than moving them manually, might be simpler, since highlighting files in the right order can be tedious.

Worked great. Last question no big deal if you don't know. Does this version just lack the doom 2 + mouse file? I used it for a lazy work around.
How can you use the new music in gzdoom?

Get a wad/pk3 of whatever music you want to use and load it in the gzdoom ini file the way I described above
