I've played a lot of DSDA Doom this looks and feels good right out of the box, at least to me

it's nice but needs a little bit of extra work

It's by far the best way to casually play all the included games authentically now. The only complaint I have is it's not easy to disable interpolation.

I will probably still prefer DSDA-Doom but they are very very close.

It's....pointless.

I thought the default font was permanently changed, but the classic font can be re-enabled in accessibility options. Figured that would be in the display options lol. Aside from that, I guess it's neat the franchise is still getting love. No real complaints here, it's just giving casual players an easier way to play.

A fork of PrBoom+ with lots of improvements for speedrunning and some modernization while still being authentic for each compatlevel supported. https://github.com/kraflab/dsda-doom

Doom Speed Demos Archive - Doom.

One of the better source ports that's Boom/MBF compatible and supports UMAPINFO. All of that means that it supports maps/user content that isn't zdoom/eternity engine specific. There are reasons not to use those source ports that are too lengthy to get into.
It's perfectly fine and I think some people just have hate boners for anything that's done to the Steam build of Doom. It's nice to have purchase that gives you a bunch of Doom stuff.

Gameplay wise it's... fine. It has some rough patches at the moment (what Nightdive port doesn't?) but I think they'll get ironed out as time goes on. I think Nightdive might have had to rush their port a little bit for the deadline and thus left some of the smaller bugs in. They're not super bad but they definitely feel a little annoying.

It's good to have an online multiplayer version of doom that isn't a pain in the ass to set up. You can just start a game and play.

I feel like the average person who wants to play Doom is inevitably going to figure out how to use source ports if they want the big fancy mods or a vanilla experience that isn't DOSbox.

Overall I think it's mostly an improvement to the previous version that was up, and having Doom 1, 2 and all of the expansions in 1 program/purchase definitely makes things easier.

Also the Id Vault is great. I know modders and development history nerds (I am both :V) are gonna eat that up and make some great stuff with it. Those early weapon and monster revisions are super interesting.

I think the only really bad thing I can say about it is that they *might* be violating the GPL code license that Doom's source code is under by not GPL-ing the code of this port itself but y'know, rules for the rich and rules for everyone else.

Bethesda and Zenimax retain ownership of the copyright to the Doom source code, but not any contributions made by third parties based on the GPL release, so they are free to do whatever they want. I have to imagine the mod compatibility for Boom etc was written from scratch.

Ahh, I see.
Code copyright/licenses are a mess and they scare me.

It's objectively better than the 320-whatever pixel resolution locked framerate of the classic..

I think way too many people here are comparing this to Brutal Doom or some other unofficial mods that aren't at all reflective of the base product.

As someone who just wants to hit 'Install' and then 'Play' without having to screw around with any sort of modding or downloading of dubious third party files, this is an amazing overhaul and 10/10 update.

love how they put doom1+2 in one package as well as the new soundtrack it goes so hard. overall i think its a good update but i with that if you got doom2 they would give you the option for a free ID game would have been nice

It's great. The Unity port (as of last update) was almost perfect for me as a vanilla+ experience, this one fixes the two gripes I had with it and adds a lot of awesome ♥♥♥♥ on top.

There was the official Unity port that we got some...time ago. This doesn't or just barely adds anything. Even requested features like (optional) free aim are missing.
