Opening the WADs in GZDoom
Hello, I'm trying to open up the WAD files I found in common/Ultimate Doom/base but when I drag and drop them onto the gzdoom.exe app, the correct main menu appears but the episodes are still Doom 1's levels. What am I doing wrong?

What levels are you trying to play?

I'm currently trying to launch Doom 2's but dragging the Doom 2 WAD on GZDoom.exe don't work

Copy them into your gzdoom folder. Run gzdoom.exe. Pick doom 2 from the list that pops up.

The latest stable GZDoom (v4.12.2) has the steam iWADs in the startup menu for me. You shouldn't need to drag and drop is you're just playing the iWADs on their own.

that's weird, mine is also 4.12.2 and I don't have a startup menu

If you've somehow turned off the startup/welcome screen you can turn it back on by setting Options > Miscellaneous Options > Show IWAD Selection dialog to On

Thank you, now it's popping up! Also I have somehow have all Doom 2 and Final Doom 2 WADs as well as these 'BFG' editions I've never heard of before, is it supposed to come pre-installed?

The BFG Edition was a pretty jank DOOM 3 remaster with jank remasters of DOOM I and II included. If you've genuinely never heard of it before, there's a couple ways you may've gotten its IWADs: I believe Bethesda's game store from before it was shuttered offered DOOM II's DOS version but with the BFG IWAD, DOOM Eternal IIRC uses BFG IWADs for its DOOM easter egg, and uh, if you downloaded a yar har har collection of IWADs at some point it may've came with the BFG IWADs.

It checks your Steam and GOG folders for some compatible IWADs. It will also detect Heretic, Hexen, Strife and a few other Doom engine games.

Doom+Doom 2 come with all officially released Doom games so they would be there and Doom 3 BFG Edition also comes with a few IWADs so if you have those in your Steam/GOG folders GZDoom will add them to the list.

Does GZDoom scans your PC for WADs anywhere? Cuz I have most of the games installed on Steam but I haven't added them to my GZDoom folder at all, it's bizarre

Yeah it uses Steam and GOG install paths at the least, probably checks for Bethesda store and Epic Games paths too.

Mystery solved then, thanks!

For future reference, it might be helpful to use a launcher[doomwiki.org] with GZDoom to make selecting WADs a lot easier.
