how to record in DOS
It's cool that Steam gives you the option of running the game in dosbox and usually you can record footage with ctrl alt f5 but that doesn't work for some reason.

there is still a folder in the directory for captures. how does it work?

Use GPU software to record. You can record from DOSBOX, but as far as I remember, you'll get just guns + demons audio and no music (or it saves MIDIs on a separate file if you change that shortcut using F8 instead of F5, but they won't play together with game's audio). Also, bad quality, since DOS version runs on lower resolutions.

If you want to record from DOSBOX and its internal shortcut is not working as intended, try booting the game from local folder and not Steam to see if it works. Or disable Steam overlay specifically for DOOM.

I've tried altering the config and changing output to opengl so I can record in OBS but I can only capture it in the original resolution and it does not resize or fill the screen.

I don't mind if the quality isn't the greatest the point is to show how the original looked in it's original settings compared to modern versions. Thanks for the advice I will try.

This won't get you easily-editable footage from Steam, but by running the game via command line, with the tag '-record (name)', you will record a Demo of your playtime, and it will be stored in the DOOM directory under your chosen (name).lmp.

This is how DOOM footage was recorded in DOS back when Windows 3.1 was the standard.

Hello Grim,
Since I tricked Steam and replaced DOSBOX with PCem a long ago, I'm no longer sure what the DB version was. There's a .gz archive saying it was 0.71, so I tried to drag DOOM.EXE to a DOSBOX 0.74 executable I saved on another folder and I was able to record a clip of main menu and E1M1.

The dialog with black screen that appears behind the main window while you are playing, showed a message that said it was recording and saving to this path: capture/doom_001.avi.

I opened the capture folder I left intact and the avi is there. It needs VLC to play correctly, however.

Note: it also recorded music on the same file, too! :steamhappy:

Hope it helps.

I don't think he meant Windows 3.1 was as 'standard' as Windows 98, XP and 7 have been, when talking about gaming. DOOM (and DOS apps, generally speaking) couldn't run on a Win 3.x environment for RAM reasons. I've found an article saying a trick was invented at the time, but I've never tried myself, as I don't own Windows 3.1. Well, my uncle had an old PC from 1994, with Windows 3.11 WFW under MS-DOS 6.20 and a program called QuikSetup to launch his office program (CAD something) or Windows itself, a flat 2-button serial mouse and a very old keyboard which wasn't even PS/2 and didn't come with the 'Start' button, however when I played DOOM from there, I always booted it from DOS, as I didn't know about the PIF workaround yet. And after I've read that article, my uncle had already unmounted everything, I think he sold his PC to somebody else.
