The dos version is the normal version.

If you want to play on modern systems, but stay faithful to the original, use Crispy Doom. The Unity version is just for console players who don't have that option.

And an excuse for Bethesda to bully people into registering an unnecessary separate account with them.

oh ok thanks. do you think you could help me with another issue i have.

when you launch doom it gives you the option to use DOS version or the other one. i normally use the DOS vcersion and i clicked the button that says that it will automatically use that version whenever i launch, but now i dont know how to change the version. and on top of that whenever i try to launch the game using the desktop link it sends me to the bethesda version not the DOS version

Among other things, Bethesda's port eliminated the ALT key for strafing with arrows, so it's more for mouse players. It should support higher resolutions as well. It also shows a message for every secret area, while DOS version didn't have that feature. This port also supports Steam overlay, while DOSBOX (where the classic version runs) doesn't (of course, there are workarounds for it).

Not normal..but Voxel Doom is awesome!
Download gzdoom. Download Voxel Doom II (with parallax textures) from moddb, install gzdoom. Copy doom.wad from your Steam install of doom to gzdoom's folder. Unzip Voxel Doom II to gzdoom folder. Enjoy!

Chocolate Doom is pretty close to it.

chrisWA I can't get the Voxel Doom II parallax features to work. The sprites are voxel but the parallax is not working. I have settings set to Vulkan, hardware acceleration, and have the parallax setting set to on. I'm using the latest GZDoom. Any suggestions?

Sorry man. Let me look at my settings later. You’re on Windows I assume?

Not sure how much I can help actually. As I recall it was just a matter of installing gzdoom and placing the wad and pk3 files in the gzdoom directory. For launch options I'm running vulkan, fullscreen, lights, brightmaps, widescreen. Check the in-game settings. Parallax textures and sprites should be enabled here and I cannot recall if it enabled by default when detecting the parallax pk3 file. I hope this helps because the parallax textures are niiiiicccce!

Edit: of course i'm so out of it today I didn't see that you DO have parallax on. Check the console or log file for any errors =(

Thanks. I'm noticing that in the other Doom forums some other folks are having the same problem, sprites have voxels but no voxels for the parallax stuff. I'm using Windows 10.

chrisWA I checked the console and there was an error that said that Vulkan could not be found! Then I tried to use OpenGL, and then the console said that a restart was required! After a restart, the parallax finally worked! Thank you for your help! Unfortunately, my old laptop is stuttering with the parallax enabled. I'll have to use my newer laptop but that's fine. HAHA!
