No, i only make a question. Original Doom is not free look, levels is concept with no free look. Play the game with freelok is a cheat to you?

Sorry about my english

Nah I personally wouldn't consider it a cheat. I think of it more of a playstyle preference rather than a cheat. Doom actually has an auto aim on by default to compensate for not being able to look up or down. I use free look with auto aim turned off.

From id Tech 1's source code readme:

Some project ideas:

Port it to your favorite operating system.

Add some rendering features -- transparency, look up / down, slopes,
etc.

Add some game features -- weapons, jumping, ducking, flying, etc.

Create a packet server based internet game.

Create a client / server based internet game.

Do a 3D accelerated version.

Look up/down is basically "free look", so as you can see, the main coder behind the game actually expected the community to come up with that.

freelook is fine, although I prefer to turn it off even in gzdoom...but jumping breaks the levels ,unless you're playing mods designed with jumping in mind

I wouldn't say that it's explicitely cheating if you remove vertical auto-aim because even if the level design is thought in 2D (and there is only one spot in Doom II that could give you advantages) I think that auto-aim isn't really cheating because the difficulty is still there

PS: I understand that vertical auto-aim doesn't works if you are too far but there aren't any really big map in Doom 1

I wouldn't say its cheating but the game wasn't designed with free look in-mind so I don't find the game fun as much. It's also disorienting.

I know it's difficult to get used to horizontal aiming, but after you get used to it, you'll find it more fun than free look.

"id Tech 1
Main article: Doom engine
Originally known as the "Doom engine", this engine powers the id Software games Doom (1993) and Doom II: Hell on Earth (1994). It was created by John Carmack, with auxiliary functions written by John Romero, Dave Taylor, and Paul Radek. Initially developed on NeXT computers, it was ported to MS-DOS for Doom's release and was later ported to several game consoles and operating systems.

The code was also reused for other titles, such as Heretic and Hexen: Beyond Heretic (both by Raven Software), and Strife: Quest for the Sigil (Rogue Entertainment).

id Tech 2
Main articles: Quake engine and Quake II engine
Previously known as "Quake engine" with its successor "Quake II engine", it was originally written to power 1996's Quake. It featured true 3D real-time rendering and is the first id Tech engine to use the client–server model.

The Quake engine was updated with a new executable titled QuakeWorld that contained code to enhance the networking capabilities of Quake in response to the demand for across-internet network games that arose as a result of Quake's usage of UDP for networking.

It was later updated again for the release of Quake II in 1997, with enhancements such as colored lighting and a new MD2 model format.[3]"

It's not really explicitly cheating, and doesn't really affect the game too much even if you do use it for reasons already mentioned in this topic.

For 'competitive' purposes (speedrunning mostly, idk much about deathmatch etiquette), the rules aim to keep the game as close to its original form as possible, so modernized features, including free-look, are considered cheating.

Isn't there a sourceport specifically made for speedruns?

Also if you wanna play Deathmatch with the most vanilla feel there's Odamex, but Zandronum is more about modded multiplayer game

I don't care what I'm breaking because I feel nothing when I hit some switch or whatever, and to me, jumping just adds more action to the experience and quickens the pace.
