True, i'd say the very old source ports like BooM and GZBooM don't support any extra multiplayer modes.
That said, i know DooMsday and ZDooM support it aswell as DooM Legacy, the latter is probably what you're reffering to as it supports local splitscreen.
Funfact: A sonic fangame called Sonic Roboblast 2 was built on top of DooM legacy.

ZDoom has multiplayer? I thought no, because GZDoom is only Singleplayer. Am I assuming it right, that GZDoom is a continuitation of ZDoom right? I never played ZDoom. I played only Skulltag, then Zandronum and now GZDoom for SP stuff.
Yeah, it was Doom Legacy. There was also ReMooD, but did not work for me either playing splitscreen: http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Splitscreen
Also you can get multiplayer working in ZDooM although it involves creating a shortcut with a command line or two, this probably carries over to GZDooM.
Another multiplayer source port i can reccomend is ZDaemon although you'll need an account for that.
