Should install a mod the first time I play Doom?
Hi, I just bought Doom Classic Complete. First it had performance problems but I fixed it by changing some notebooks on the game folder, now the game runs ok. I'm new to Doom. So should I play without mods for the first time, or install ZDoom/GZDoom/Doom Zandronum/Chocolate Doom or any other?
Thanks.

I recommend playing Doom as it is first. Then get brutal Doom and/or Russian Overkill and play around a bit.

I would recommend hideous destructor if you want a challenge, or something completely different. Turns doom into a military tactical shooter emulating everything from gun weight, realistic recoil, bleed out, ect. Fights with a few zombies is a life or death scenario, not something you shrug off while firing away at without paying attention.

If you can beat episode 1 with it, I will be impressed.

If you decide to play vanilla, use Zdoom of gzdoom. It makes no changes to the game but modernizes the engine and provides some QOL improvements that I wouldn't play without.

After that I would play with brutal doom.

If you want a source port that aims to provide an authentic vanilla experience you need Chocolate Doom.

I played it for the first time in its vanilla form in 2014. I used the source port chocolate doom for recreating the experience from 1993.

But you can go with other source ports if you want better graphics, resolutions and framerates.

I've just installed DOOM a few minutes ago. Perhaps you could instal some HD-textures or the mod Smooth DOOM. The mod improves the animations of the monsters greatly, and ads new death-animations. Also WADs. Plenty of WADs. That's the good thing about DOOM (")>

Too bad trying to load any maps with Chocolate-Doom is stupidly hard.

Smooth Doom is the only place I'll allow any give. Other than that, your first play should be vanilla.
