The smoothest experience to play vanilla DOOM
I have tested Doom on many source ports and can say that dsda-doom is the best.

It runs super smooth with no stutters, lags or mouse stutters, especially if you set OpenGL in the video options. I have 2000 fps on my 2012 PC. You can play with Vsync Off and remove the tearing using the option of Rivatuner tool Scanline Sync and avoid input lag that causes Vsync On (Scanline Sync, like AMD's FreeSync and NVIDIA's G-Sync, is a technology that seeks to replace the V-Sync standard)

I also recommend using DoomLauncher to launch WADs

Tbh, there are A LOT of source ports that run vanilla Doom super smooth at this point. The more popular ones are: PrBoom+, DSDA-Doom, Woof, Crispy. The less vanilla choices like Doom Retro, GZDoom, LZDoom also run the game exceptionally well. Eternity Engine is capable of running the game super smooth but only at higher uncapped framerates (if you are really picky, you will notice some choppiness at lower framerates). And then there is Chocolate Doom which also runs the game exceptionally well even if it can only output 35 fps (the only caveat is that with that odd number you'd want a vrr monitor or 70hz refresh rate monitor for the best experience possible).

...and then there are a lot of other source ports that run the game perfectly.

Well, I still have Pentium 133MHz with SB AWE in working condition. CRT display is dead already, but IPS DELL does upscaling of the VGA/MCGA input quite good. And it has high sRGB coverage as well.

I noticed that Woof is the fastest in software mode and has better compatibility with wads. while dsda-doom and prboom+ are the best options for playing in OpenGL mode, but they have less support and things I don't like, like displaying a wrong background image on the menu screen, which can be fixed by putting a mod on the autoload folder.

Woof is the best choice for play with a retro aspect and it have better WADs support.

dsda-doom and prboom+ are the best option to play in high resolution as long as you switch to OpenGL mode, since in high resolution you get low fps in Software mode. Although the appearance of the shadows changes and is no longer like the original.

My favorite source port for now is Woof.

Here is some good news for you: https://github.com/kraflab/dsda-doom/pull/97

What this means is that soon DSDA will have an option to select paletted software rendering in OpenGL mode (ie OpenGL performance + original Doom looks).
