how do i play doom without steam
Is it possible for me to use doom without having to use steam? just wondering.

For the sake of providing extra context, I'm using the Crispy Doom source port and the ZDL launcher.

Ya you don't need Steam on to play.

Are you implying that I could delete Steam completely off of my computer and I could still play Doom? Not that I would consider doing that of course, just wondering.

Oh ya, Steam is primarily a software store/delivery service. There are some multiplayer games that require it I think for anti-cheat services, but most games don't need steam running or even installed to run.

i believe most games (especially more modern ones) do actually need steam to run as a lot of developers opt to include very basic steam DRM in their products which mandate that steam be running in order to boot it, however a lot of old games are DRM free, and naturally that includes any game like DOOM which is a dos executable that requires an emulator like dosbox in order to run it

I suppose there are some games that might give you this error "Steam Must Be Running to Play This Game". While some games might need Steam to just initially activate, but not when running subsequent runs.

Source ports definitely don't need Steam though, like Crispy Doom you mentioned. Just copy over the .wad files from the Steam installation to whereever you install the source port.

Thanks. I was just wondering in case I stop using Steam, which will likely be in the far future...

zdl is easier than ctrl+clicking and dragging your multiple files onto the engine .exe.

And you can always just play as it's meant to be with dosbox.
