Source ports?
So does anyone use the unity version packaged in or do you still just use something like GZDoom?

I use Eternity Engine for my regular plays and GZDoom when I want to play more advanced mods which requires it.

TBH, most people using the Unity port belongs in a few categories.

1) New players that just want to dip their toes in.
2) People that just want to play without learning about Sourceports/mods.
3) Console players.

Yeah, the dosbox release files have been left untouched. Including the wad that ain't censored.

But, to be fair, the censoring ain't even that bad. Just the color of a cross... Secret levels that are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ anyway and that's pretty much it. There might be other minor things but nothing really sticked out to me.

EDIT: For the secret levels. I was thinking about Doom 2. Sorry for the confusion there.

GZDoom, best there is, best there was and the best there ever will be... Been playing Doom since it's release back in 1993, seen all manner of source ports release and I've watched GZDoom (Zdoom) become what it is today...

Depends on what you are looking for really.

Almost everyone should have GZDoom ready to boot. Mainly because of all the mods that requires it.

But, if you just want to play Doom and all you are looking for is different WADs... Well, there is better options than GZDoom out there. The main reason being that the default configuration of GZDoom is complete bullocks. Especially if you want a faithful experience.

GZDoom for mods that requires it and Eternity Engine for regular play. That's what is the "best there is" for me. Again, for me... Everyone is different. But, most players I interacted with over the years more than often have multiple sourceport ready. Usually one for mods, one for regular play and one for multiplayer.

I disagree, you are valid in your opinion though... But in my opinion, for a pure experience Chocolate doom...

Don't take it to the extreme. Of course if you want the full 90s feeling out of it it's either Dosbox or Chocolate. But, if you want the vanilla experience while having some minor additional features. (High Resolution and larger support for wads for example.) Chocolate alone won't cut it.

So, far the only Doom sourceports that checks the correct boxes with me are Eternity and PrBoom+. Both are accurate enough to satisfy my purist needs while giving me the only improvements I want while keeping everything else close to vanilla.

PrBoom is indeed awesome, I still like GZDoom better, but to each their own I say.

Which is exactly why I replied to you in the first place. GZDoom is not the end-it-all sourceport and shouldn't be sold as it. There is a large variety of sourceports made for a large variety of players. There is plenty of reasons to use one over the other. No Doom sourceport out there "have it all". Which is why so many projects are still alive.

There is no "right or wrong" way to play Doom. That's the beauty of it.

doesn't gzdoom have several demo incompatibilities with the original game, even on the strictest compatibility settings? i'd personally prefer a port that replicates the original game's behavior as much as possible when i can help it

Yes, it does indeed. For a pure experience, crack on with Chocolate doom...

Given the choice im going to use GZDoom everytime. Im too spoiled by it now. Ive got mine setup like this. https://youtu.be/SGv9UOngXJs
(Wadsmoosh is awesome.) It works with Delta Touch for Android too.

I only use the this version when im playing on Switch.

"DOOM Retro" became my favorite, the smoothest gameplay with the retro feel, and some quality of life improvements and tweaks
I recommend changing in doomretro.cfg
r_translucency off
(so the fireballs are in full bright)
GZdoom for mod support 100%
Zandronum for online play Doom Doom II Hexen Heretic etc.
LZdoom for other things
Odamex for online play
Zdeamon for just the classic feel not OpenGL etc. just software and online offcourse and Level/XP counts
