This was also an early attempt by Carmack at a 'simulationist' control scheme -- where it made for precise interaction with the rare 'jump puzzles', like the box room in E1M9.
You needed to ramp up your speed & control your landing with the mouse-glide for those maneuvers.
Mouselook+WASD is far more enjoyable, and why it won out as the industry standard -- especially with Quake & Build3D "DOOM Killer" titles taking the forefront.
