It's updating to the Bethesda's version of Doom :(
Noooo, I have to reinstall all the source ports and zdls and wads. Damn, I had such a perfect configuration.

Oh well, gratz to those who waited for the Bethesda port.

FALSE ALARM!

The update didn't break any previously installed files. The new Doom port has just been downloaded alongside with currently installed game files.

Respect for that, Bethesda.

"It's updating to the Bethesda's version of Doom"
That's not a good thing, is it?

Meh, it doesn't have achievements or anything too much special, just a port of the bethesda version. Better to just use a source port IMO. I would love if there were achievements at least since PS4 & xbox have them

Idk, I don't care about achievements. The only thing I was worried about was the way they will handle the original game files. And it seems like the update didn't rewrite any of the files that were previously installed, so that's a good thing.

Whoever made that patch believes we are complete idiots apparently.
They tell us to not turn off our system while downloading addons.

Not sure who would start the game, sit through unbearable intros that force one to wait half a minute before being able to do anything, then go to addons, click on download, and then press the power button on the PC.
But apparently enough testers for Bethesda and id do that to warrant a note on this in the addons screen, which is highly insulting to everyone else.

Really, Bethesda and id? How dumb do you think Steam users are?

Calm down. Either this is your first time playing a video game or you're just wanting to be negative. That kind of thing is completely boilerplate and unrelated to what developers think.

this version was released on consoles long ago. this isn't just a PC or steam version. you can also just press a button to instantly skip the intros. maybe the developer's belief wasn't unfounded in your case.

Okay, you can get rid of the unbearable intro cutscenes by going into the game's StreamingAssets folder and deleting the "logo" files ending in mp4, also the DLegal.mp4

Game now crashes on exit, so replace all by a very short mp4 instead, I guess. But starting time now is like five seconds instead of thirty.

I don't even know where to begin. It seems anything new no matter how flawed it may be, is preferred by the more ignorant over the old. Get a sourceport, or just play Dosbox. The only way I can possibly comprehend how anyone would prefer the Bethesda version is if they are unknowing or uncaring of the other sourceports, or in most cases, haven't given other ports even a chance. The truth is, it's more convenient to install a sourceport in the long run, but laziness overcomes the simple idea of two button clicks and a extract.

Games like DOOM are different in the sense that they don't follow modern procedures like achievements and all that other useless BS; because obviously they were never meant to be played that way. Of course GZDoom and other advanced engines push the game to new heights, but in terms of JUST the OG game, and more specifically this storefront for it, it's unnecessary other than appeal to the new crowd. I wasn't even born when DOOM came out, but I'm tired of in modern games getting an achievement for just booting it up or completely the first few mandatory quests. ID made this game in the exact image they had in mind in 1993, and I wouldn't doubt it if they felt the same in 2020. Anyhow, I've rambled long enough. You get my point.

I hope this gives us achievements, does it?

what does the part about modern procedures and achievements have to do with this port. and the way i see it is, this version was already made a long time ago, primarily for consoles, which is great, this is the best console version of doom ever released, and they happened to have released it for PC as well. if it's already made, might as well include it with the steam purchase.

maybe people are unknowing or uncaring of the sourceports. fine by me. so many people who are unknowing in that regard have surely decided to try out doom for the first time, to buy it on steam, only to be greeted by the horrible default dosbox configuration provided for the game that makes the game look, sound, and run terrible. and those people probably either quit because of it, or played/finished the game, not knowing that the game isn't supposed to feel, look, and sound that terrible. i'm glad that this version gives the most casual and unknowing of people a solid enhanced version of the game that is instantly playable without having to configure a bunch of superfluous options to get gameplay true to the original. even within GZDoom itself, if you haven't played doom before, if you want to get just a vanilla version of the game with proper mouse support, higher resolution and framerate, while otherwise keeping all the graphics and gameplay settings original, you're gonna have to do research to even know what is original and what isn't. for instance, isn't mouselook a default setting in GZdoom, as well as bullet decals, enhanced lighting, crosshair, non-infinitely tall monsters, and probably a lot more, including various compatibility flags? players who were simply instructed to download GZDoom and boot the game up would probably think all of that is how the original game played. there are some people like me who, besides enhanced resolutions and framerates, likes to keep their games as close to the original as possible when playing on enhanced versions, graphic and gameplay wise, so it would be very hard for someone like me to know what is original and what are liberties taken by the creators of GZDoom without having played the original game first, and i'd want to know these things. so yes, i'm quite glad there is an easy, pre-packaged source port that hardly contains any superfluous and unnecessary 'enhancement' settings, or unnecessary changes to gameplay, a port that even the most casual of person can buy, play, without even knowing what a source port is, and not have to worry about having to tinker a bunch of options just to get an enhanced version of the vanilla gameplay experience.

and if nothing else, this version gives people like us free legal wads for master levels, final doom, (without having to purchase them separately on steam) and the No Rest For The Living campaign previously exclusive to the xbox 360 version.

(and i do really wish they would update the default dosbox configuration for these games to not be trash, i've made my own that runs really well, they'd just have to change a few crucial settings to make the experience so much better, but oh well)

Well my oh my that's an essay and a half. Didn't know anyone would take my comment to heart and so personally too. I'm not one to argue with complete strangers on the internet, never was my thing. I will say though that everything you just said proves my point. Those settings you speak of aren't rocket science. It doesn't take more than 15 minutes to set your config for any one sourceport. Its extremely easy and forgiving, as you can always change it to what you prefer in game. I don't know why it's so hard for you but if you need help I'll gladly assist.

And just too add a personal story, I booted up doom 6 years ago or so in Dosbox and had a blast. Took a while to set up sure, but I never felt it was terrible. Just the effect of good game design and an open mind.

And for anyone who just got the game; reading this wondering how to have a good experience on doom here ya go:

Zandronum:
https://zandronum.com/

Crispy DOOM:
http://latest.chocolate-doom.org/

Zandronum Setup
Zandronum is a modern port. Download it, extract it to it's own folder, and put the DOOM.wad in the same folder as Zandronum. The DOOM.wad file is located in the Ultimate DOOM game files. After the transfer, click Zandronum.exe and take 15 minutes to adjust your settings. Then your good to play ANY and ALL doom games and mods for years. Never have to touch another thing.

Crispy Doom Setup
Crispy DOOM is an enhanced port of DOOM, with a much closer resemblance to DOSBOX than modern ports. Same instructions as the Zandronum install. Except be sure to set your settings first in the setup.exe. It's a favorite amongst fans who want a more pure experience.
