it's not a standard setting and have to be enabled.

do you use a sourceport, if yes, which one?

The original Dos game never showed the secrets until the end of the level

Nope. No sourceports

The "secret revealed" message / chime was never implemented in the original game, so if you're playing the game through the original DOS executable (or Chocolate Doom, which emulates the DOS version to a T), then you'll never be notified about the secret count until you reach the intermission screen.

It wasn't until Quake 1 implemented the idea that developers began porting it back to Doom. Any gameplay footage with a "you found a secret" message is more than likely playing on a source port developed after 1998.

Thanks for the long explanation, I wasn't sure about what to say.

But could someone tells me what is the sound used for Zdoom (I think it came from another game)

On a personal note I always enable the secret message and sound because I find this satisfying to see that after spending some time searching in the level

EDIT: I think Brutal Doom used the Tomb Raider sound effect in an older version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8eskuLLkk4

"A secret is revealed" originates back to Boom, if I recall. True vanilla source ports like DOSBox and Chocolate Doom do not show secrets until the end of the level. Crispy has it as a setting.

Boom truly revolutionized the Doom community back then, especially by removing a lot of limitations of the original port.
