DOOM + DOOM II

DOOM + DOOM II

Statistiche:
Can I make GZDOOM resemble vanilla?
Hey people, today I wanted to experiment. I know that mods are rarely compatible with Dos or Chocolate, but still, I wanted to experience what it would feel like playing them with Doom's original look and sound, while at the same time having the convenience of GZDOOM. I don't really care about enemy behavior, I'm primarily aiming to replicate the superficial stuff.

You got any tips on what I could mess around with in the settings?

Messaggio originale di Gameo:
Video Mode- Hardware
Display Options- transparency vanilla
--Rocket, blood and bullet- sprites only
Display/hardware Renderer- sector light software
--banded SW- on
--fog standard
--enhanced nightvision- off
--fuzz style- software
Display/hardware/postprocessing- tonemap mode palette

Texture options nothing fancy, no filter mode
no dynamic lights

That'll take care of visuals with hardware mode instead of software

To add on, I found this informative tutorial

Check this video out as well as the comment I posted for making GZDoom like vanilla-ish too.

theres every reason to use gzdoom, because anything that isnt a zdoom branch port sucks because there are no options
he told you in the op he doesnt care about that. read

If you want to go this far, wouldn't it be better to choose another source port that is made with vanilla feeling in mind? (Chocolate or Crispy Doom, or Prboom+).

Chocolate is made with 100% vanilla-ity in mind, but personally I don't use it because resolution is so bad.
Crispy is basically upgraded Chocolate, with better resolution and some optional enhancements (like colored HUD numbers).
Prboom+ is even more advanced (dynamic lights, textured automap, widescreen resolution etc.) - I personally use it, as it balances well between vanilla and comfort. All enhancements, including OpenGL, are optional.

If you don't care about total-conversion mods and huge eyecandy, there is really no reason to use (G)ZDoom.
Thanks for the advice. I’m familiar with Choco and Crisp, they’re upgraded versions of the Dos version, correct?

However I find GZDoom to be more intuitive when it comes to modding. Sometimes I feel like playing some overhaul mod but with old classic graphics, just for kicks.
Thanks for the advices guys, you’re all great!
Alright, after experimenting a little bit i found a good trick. Without having to resort to the Vanilla Essence Mod, the best way to get that pixelated look is to go to Options, Set Video Mode, set your resolution to 640x480 in the 4:3 aspect (you can choose a resolution preset), and then set your scale factor bar to minimum (0.25). Voilà.

Doom's vanilla resolution is 320x200 stretched vertically to 4:3.

Yup, seems like it. But since 320x200 isn't in the Resolution Presets option (The lowest is 640x480), you have to go through Scale Factor and then scale by half, to get half the resolution. From my understanding of it, I could be wrong.

Cathy's Ray Tube and TrooCullers (you don't have to use tonemap mode and is much more faithful to Vanilla, dynamically gaining/losing detail as you move about) are essential.
Lighting also needs to be Software OR Vanilla, but keep in mind Vanilla gets DARK.
