Brutal Doom; cannot change to Rip and Tear mode for berserk fatalities.

I've never played Brutal Doom before, and all this DOOM ETERNAL stuff has got me craving some new DOOM experiences, so I'm giving it a go. I'm absolutely loving it to death right now, but, I can't figure out how to get the animated executions that I see in all the videos. I know you need Berserk and then with fists equiped, press reload to change from regular melee smashing to RIP AND TEAR for the executions.
Pressing the key I have bound for reload on both the "weapon reload" and the advanced BD reload action, does nothing when I'm tring to switch the modes. Why isn't this working?

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

try unbinding it from regular reload and leaving it bound to BD reload

Yeah I tried that as well. Still didn't work :/
