first are you playing in gzdoom

if not then you either have it disabled

or you're playing vanilla doom by launching the game straight from steam in dosbox

the secret message and sound isn't in vanilla doom

playing straight out the library. like i said no mods no anything...

but didn't the original doom had this message?

nope

you probably watched a video of gzdoom and mistook it for vanilla doom (the original doom executable for clarification)

I can confirm what Sgt Nate V said. I played Shareware Doom on a 486. Only way to know was to finish the level and check the intermission map.

The "A Secret is Revealed!" message was from Boom, which a lot of source ports took after. Chocolate/Crispy Doom don't replicate it, as they ignore Boom and go for emulating DOSBox behavior.

thanks guys for the clarification

Crispy Doom added the secret revealed message as an option!

I was mistaken, looking back -- A Secret Is Revealed comes from Quake, which I assume Boom took after for convenience.

You are right. But it was not BOOM, but one of the later 'wanna be quakes' of source-ports. Not sure, though, which one was the first one to implement this feature. Most probably ZDoom v1.xx. The other candidate is DOOM Legacy. Those two ports where mimicing Quake from the very beginning.

O'kay. Another one unpopular fact then. 'Secret revealed' sound appeared first not in Quake but in Strife. Which is DOOM-engine based game, released the same year one month earlier.

Pretty damn annoying when you don't know you found a secret, though
