To - Look Up and Down -
I consider myself to be something of a 'purist' when it comes to Doom.

I don't think it's 'better' - I can enjoy all forms and make no judgement call on what
anyone else likes.

I started building as soon as Doom came out and came to appreciate Doom in it's
original form - but as a builder I was thrilled to be able to see my levels in a more
realistic and natural way - (meaning without the unnatural limitation of a fixed lateral
view only) - That's not the way we see things.

What made my levels so popular are the multi-level playfields and views.

Here are just a few examples that reveal the positive aspects of the true 3D experience:

MaxCastl - Wood Steps - In a fixed lateral view you could only see the risers.

In many of these places it's absolutely necessary to see up and down.

Why should players limit their ability?

Old/vanilla maps you kinda want to play it without looking up and down.
A wad that gives you a different game with tall buildings and such, you'll mostly want to play it while being to explore the game.
Besides, There's auto-aim, it kinda breaks the point of having mouse freelook, ig. I play with mouse freelook while still maintaining the auto aim, yet I mostly play DOOM only moving the camera horizontally ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really dig using free-look as it makes me feel like I'm there. It helps immersion and makes the game feel more advanced than it really was.

I use the Doomsday Engine and it let's you turn auto-aim off which is what I do.

GZDoom also has that feature. Freelook is required to simulate full 3D; - A fixed plane
limits perspective to just one of infinite planes. - That's not the way humans experience
'being there' - free look is always much more immersive.- I even use ECWolf to freelook
playing the original Wolfenstein.

I couldn't play without these view angles: - (Also it really helps with building)

It doesn't really matter if you use mouse look or not really, I don't find it breaks maps or anything unless you bypass a part of a map that was supposed to be intended by shooting a switch you were supposed to be level with in a particular part of a map.
Without opengl there's pretty bad screen warping when looking around but other than that no big deal.
I mouse look without autoaim when playing with a mouse and I lock the vert axis and use autoaim when I play with a controller just because it's more convenient that way.
looking upn down in classic maps breaks them, more modern maps allow you to do it.

In wich concrete way does it 'break' it ?

The good thing is that people who want vertical look can use mods like Brutal Doom and Project Brutality. The reason why the developers at the time chose to restrict vertical look is due to technical limitations at the time.

Icon of Sin can be broken without vertical look by playing with a modern day keyboard+mouse setup. Ball mice from the 2000s were terrible, much less ones from 1993. Keyboard only is also very limiting

A lot of the design choices of games have to be considered in the context of when they came out. Icon would've automatically been harder due to the limitations of available peripherals

And even without vertical look, switches in Vanilla can still be manipulated no matter their "height" because the game has no Z-axis. Technically all buttons are on the same level as Doom Guy (The game doing a bit of math behind the scenes to simulate verticality in certain specific contexts doesn't prove anything as some may claim, but that's an argument that will persist for another 29 years)

Even in older games with native vertical look like DN3D/Blood/etc I don't really like it because of the shearing artifacts. Although I guess you could say the shearing artifacts could be nostalgic in their own right. Really depends on the person

I usually limit myself to horizontal look for Doom. If I want true 3D I just go to Quake or Quake 2. But sometimes I use it for the sake of it. Can only play Vanilla so long before getting tired of it
