Running Chocolate Doom Through Steam
Fed up with DosBox freezing the first time I try to run it each time (it works the second; have implemented all fixes I've found recommended on Steam), I decided I'd just run Chocolate Doom instead.

Chocolate Doom works fine executing it on its own from the folder, and even finds my old saves. However, I'd like to be able to use it through Steam and select the modern control default upon launch. I've placed it in the base folder and renamed it "dosbox.exe." Steam launches Chocolate Doom correctly, but it no longer seems to find my saves. Any thoughts on what could be causing the issue, or how to set it up to smoothly launch through Steam as my preferred Doom platform rather than DosBox?

Thanks!

Edit -- Just after posting this and poking around a few folders, I realized I had Doom (the steam-downloaded app) set to run in Windows '95 compatability. Switching it to Windows '98 fixed the freezing-every-other-time thing. I'm still curious about what was going on with Chocolate and if there's a smooth way to get it running and looking at the right files though.

Try making a folder called doomdata and copying the saves there, if this does not work, try the same but with prboom or prboom+

How do you switch to make this game run? I am having trouble having this game launch to screen title.

I wound up downloading ZDL, a Doom sourceport launcher, and putting all its files in the Steam base folder for Ultimate Doom, then renamed ZDL "Dosbox" so Steam launches it when you select the game.

For saves, right now I just addressed it by keeping them in the same folder as Chocolate Doom, but I'd like to figure out a system to point all source ports (should I get more) to the same saves.

This one's actually pretty easy. Grab DOOM.exe from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Ultimate Doom\base and open it (or drag it on top of) the Chocolate Doom executable. It'll load the Steam version with all your saves through Chocolate Doom. You just need to Alt+Tab twice because initially it'll look like it's frozen, but tab back to it and it'll be functional. Hope that helps!

Next time you ask such questions - don't. Google's there for a reason.
