Developers in general are rarely doing this for a variety of reasons. Often, third-party products are used when developing a game, integrated into the game and you are not allowed to share the tool to other third parties for legal reasons, for instance because you have to buy a license for each person using the tool or working with that code library et cetera and therefore opening the code to the public would violate what was agreed on when the developer bought the product.

Fair, but if they release the code we the people could do it ourselves lol

I meant that there is 0% chance of them ever willingly releasing the source code. This has been requested in every buggy or half finished indie/kickstarter/early access game ever, and it never ever happens.

Despite what I think about buggy or half finished indie/kickstarter/early access games, it ultimately is their property.

Well, I guess not then. Would've been cool if they had been able to though. At least its already a pretty good game.

Give people their money back?

OR

Put some updates out?

OR

Just disappear off the platform all together, rather have no response than a response with no action.

Hey Communism,

Giving people their money back isn't our prerogative unfortunately, you have to go through Steam or Humble Bundle's refund system. More than all the money that we made from Castle Story sales was spent on the game's development and paying our employees their wages (which were all very reasonable.) We actually received investments from various private and public entities to help fund the development of Castle Story.

Like we've said before though, unfortunately, Castle Story was our first project and we had little to no game development experience when we started it, so the codebase is extremely difficult to work with, which made it difficult to fix some of the issues our community was most upset about. It's not that we didn't want to fix them or add certain features, it's that doing so would require a rewrite or a massive amount of code which we simply couldn't afford.

At the time being, releasing any updates isn't an option for us due to financial hardships. We were hoping our second title, Mirador (which mind you, was developed considerably more scaleable than Castle Story) would provide us some financial stability, but it didn't. At the time being, we don't employ any developers and are only in maintenance mode. This might change in the future, but we can't announce anything yet. Once again, it's not that we don't want to, we love Castle Story and we love the community. We simply don't have the resources to update it any further for the time being.

Disappearing off the platform isn't an option and I don't agree with you that it's the right move. We mistakenly went radio silence a few years back due to not knowing how to handle toxicity from the community and we strongly regret that. As long as we're able to, we'll continue interacting and being part of our community, even if we can't make new content right now.

Making games is hard, we're human too. We don't have any ill intentions and despite making some mistakes in the past when it comes to development and communications, we're still proud of where Castle Story is today and the fact that we've delivered on every single promise we ever made. Everything we said Castle Story would have during the Kickstarter and communications of the game, we made sure to develop and add.

We're all too aware of some performance and AI issues with the game that affect some players and that there are highly requested features our players would love to see. We could keep developing Castle Story forever and we wouldn't get bored, but unfortunately, that's not the reality we're in right now.

I'm very sorry you feel the way you do (and I mean it when I say that, this isn't some PR sand I'm throwing at you) but it's important to us that you understand that while we fully believe your frustrations are justified, we never ever had or will have any ill intentions and none of our decisions were ever fueled by greed or any other sort of agenda besides trying to make our games as awesome as we can, with the resources that we had.

Didn't expect my small topic to pick up a developer response and to spark a conversation like this. I was just hoping on an update for the AI pathing or a fix for small things like idle AI. The game is good and I've enjoyed it when I played it, Just got frustrated after a while with the the same issues repeating themselves. Now someone close this thread before it gets out of hand :P
We actually read every single thread posted, every social media post we're tagged in, etc. :) If you could elaborate a little more on the AI issues you're having, oftentimes it's actually mismanagement by the player rather than the Bricktrons being "broken". There are edge cases where Bricktrons' behave a little funky, but during normal gameplay we're not aware of any gamebreaking or progress stopping/slowing bugs.

It has sparked such a reaction because many people agree, why stop updating?

Like I said above, literally because we ran out of money. We had more than a dozen developers working on Castle Story, but at some point, the sales the game were making weren't enough to cover the costs and our next option was to either shut down the studio, or get investment for a new game, which we did (see; Mirador) - hoping that releasing a new title would offer us some financial stability to continue working on both Castle Story and the new game. Unfortunately, that did not happen.

Once again, it's not that we don't want to keep updating the game, it's that we financially can't. So we did the best of what a relatively small indie team can do and focused our efforts on bringing the game to completion so we could call it complete and cease development on it, rather than stopping before we had released all promised features. It's what we thought was the honest thing to do.

really sad......
Skaliton 2021 年 5 月 9 日 上午 8:18
maybe the reason the sales weren't enough is because the game sucks and at release was a buggy mess. It has very little replay value and doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a building sim (ie minecraft) is it a tower defense game?

I give you credit though, it is meant to be fun for a couple of hours before it immediately becomes stale as if by design your goal was to get just over the refund window.

Castle Story had potential but when they abandoned it disappointed many people, many youtubers loved the game, but now no one knows the game. I expect the game to be updated at least once a year. but no, they have to abandon a game with a lot of potential. a tip, if you're going to make a game make it interesting and make the game known.

Well since this is turning a little sour and hostile, and the OP has been fully answered, I'm going to go ahead and lock this.

If you have any questions about Castle Story or Sauropod Studio in general, feel free to join the official Discord of the game, we're pretty active on there.
