Are you able to connect with other players? If it's only both of you, one of you may have something blocking the connection - firewall, anti-virus, tunnel services (like Hamachi) or VPNs.
When i host he can find my lobby when i select friends only or private but joining ends in a multiplayer error.
When hosting public he can join and load the game, after about 6 minutes playing suddenly the connection stops working and on his screen all the thingies walk on the spot while its running normally for me (host).
He then has to leave the game because nothing is happening.
We tried it now 3 times and get frustrated.
It just didnt work.
We switched roles as host and joiner, didnt matter really.
1.) Either one got a "connection timed out" Network Error (although we were in the lobby and all was fine)
2.) it didnt let any of us connect to the other ("Joining Lobby" forever)
3.) when one was in the game for example when one started a lobby with a savegame, then the one who joined the lobby got a lobby freeze while downloading the map (the game was running but the lobby freezed as the download wasnt moving and the chat wasnt working anymore, nothing would react anyway which could only be solved by leaving the lobby again. The host would see messages being written by the one who joined, but the one who joined didnt get any response from the lobby.)
4.) and last but not least the popular problem that when you managed to get into a game together, then after a few minutes the Brickdudes started walking on spot for the joined player (host player could play normal, the "Next Wave" Timer also went on normally for the joined player).
Depending on who hosted and who joined it took some more minutes until that happened but it inevitably came for all of us at one point and couldnt be solved.
Which meant all progress was lost and the joined player had to leave (quitting to menu didnt work, just completely leaving the game).
Progress is lost since starting with a save game doesnt work as described above (Point 3. lobby freeze).
The recommended fixes i could find do NOT work.
It has nothing to do with opening a Port (done by hand and automatically), it has nothing to do with firewalls or anti-virus programms as exceptions were made and even the firewalls turned off, it had 0 effect and so has to be considered unrelated (i think i dont have to add that this shouldnt even be a thing right? Like, you shouldnt have to turn it off or add the exception manually to get a online game working).
A complete reinstall of the game didnt work either, even after wiping out all data from the PC.
Result:
The games multiplayer doesnt work. Period.
All that is working is the demo-phase of multiplayer, meaning the first 6-10 minutes before one player has to leave because of the walking on spot.
I have also met several people with all of the mentioned problems mixed together, ingame or here on the forums, so its not a random thing that barely happens.
Its regulary for a lot of players.
On top there are several issues with the games multiplayer altogether:
Some icons in the lobby are broken, people joining a lobby take over randomly the avatars from friends on my friendslist.
Like i had suddenly a player joining with the avatar of a friend who owns the game but wasnt online.
It obviously was a random player and not my steam friend.
The multiplayer settings and how lobbies work are just useless and flawed by design.
Like, theres an option to have lobbies be limited to "friends only", just that friends cant see the lobby anyway.
Its also not possible to A: invite friends (through steam) since that ends in a network error or B: invite friends over the game and not the steam overlay, since theres no button to do that (no "Invite Friends" ingame button, like why not?).
Setting a game on private has the exact same result.
The lobby doesnt appear anywhere, and i cant invite any friend to it because it only ends in a network error (why are lobbies set to private not locked but still appear i nthe lobby list?).
Which means that the settings "friends only" and "Private" are useless and not working in any way, which means theres only one way to open a lobby, which is public.
Meaning you have to kick people you dont want, while playing together is a gamble anyway.
Its questionable all the way, why are lobbies online when i click "Host" anyway? It should become available as soon as i click a button like "ready".
When i open a lobby its instantly public for all to join, even if i set it to private afterwards. Why?
Opening a local server is not possible.
Like when i click "Host Game" i cant select whether i want an internet game or a local area network game.
Meaning that programms like Hamachi or Tunngle are useless since it makes no difference.
I dont know what the option "Join directly" has to do there, i see no occasion where i could use that way to connect to a lobby with the available tools the game provides.
I mean i get that the number of the servers are shown and i can type them in manually, but why would i when i see the server on the server list anyway?
This would only make sense when alobby was set to private, in which case i couldnt see the number though.
Pointless?
Why is there not a simple "Add password" button before creating a lobby so my game is set on "Private" and requires a password to enter.
It would appear on the server list but be locked by that password.
This way my friends would not have to connect via Steam Invitation but simply by entering said password.
I mean, seriously, its done this way since internet gaming exists.
Even the first Stronghold provided these functions.
End Result: Multiplayer is not working and a complete mess.
So much that i have to facepalm at its overall design.
Theoretically you shouldnt be allowed to offer it as a currently working feature on the store page, because it does not work and has so many flaws, technically and by design.
I recommend you work on the multiplayer and how lobbies work, make it work stable. It would also be good to make it possible to have players connect to running games if they somehow disconnect.
I could overlook a lot of these flaws if at least playing together would work without weird bugs and disconnects.
I like the game basically, its fun its cool. If the multiplayer would work we had a really fun and great game to play together. The few minutes playing together were fun already.
But the way it is its just a hassle and doesnt work and so wastes our time.
You have a gem of a game, but you waste that gem with being lazy on the technical side.
I've had some very good results with port forwarding its quite stable
The game is a mess and multiplayer isnt working properly.
The studio failed and im curious how long they might stay in the industry. Maybe they find some money in the mobile market, but their PC Games were failures in terms of quality and appeal.
Which is sad, because Castle Story is a great concept and the fact it has multiplayer makes it a unique game compared to similar ones.
A few more years of excessive refining, polishing and content additions would make this an absolute classic and must have.
Add a few systems that werent a thing back when it released but are popular now and it could blow up.
But the way it is it rather has the taste of a game like Towns or Gnomoria.
Nice idea, bad execution and abandoned although it had more potential.
Maybe they werent experienced and skilled enough back then.
Me and my frind still have the problem in 2024 ^^ maybe u can help us?
