Building on wood?
I noticed a new patch today, which seems to allow building dynamic structures on wood and logs. Could it be that my dream has come true? Yes, I'm the guy who's been complaining about this since the ability to build on logs was taken out. Can someone confirm? I won't get the chance to spend much time on Castle Story for a while, but if this is true, then it's excellent news!

Hey Malidictus!

Thanks for still being in the community of Castle Story! :D

Yeah, the original link was in the news article, but I hadn't seen the video. Great! This is absolutely fantastic to hear. My giant warehouse project has officially restarted :) I'm still having crippling performance issues with too many stockpiles on the Big Island, but we'll see what we can do about that. I kind of need the space of that, since my warehouse design is something like 26x30 in terms of land footprint!

This is exactly what I was hoping for all along, though. This now makes wooden floors actually useful and allows us to create more compact structures without taking up so much ground. And yes, I realise the irony of building a 26x30 building in order to save space :)

Thank you kindly.

Any chance you can send us the savefile with the big amount of stockpiles? We're aware of that but the more savefiles we have, the better we can determine how to optimize that.

Report submitted as requested. Let's just hope I used the interface on the site correctly. The save file in question is TERRIBLE, baraely maintaining 15 FPS and freezing the game for minutes at a time when doing much of anything. It got progressively worse and worse as I played, and is the worst when I try to add too many stockpiles to a job.

I'm hoping to be able to use the Big Island map since none of the smaller ones offer flat ground to build on.

in the workshop there are flat maps

Ah, good point, I'll go look.

The thing, though, is I don't necessarily need a map that's flat as a sheet of paper. I just need one with enough land area to build a structure of this size without some part of it going off the island entirely, or into a tall. Most of the "regular" maps are built with fairly small "platforms." I'll have a look through the workshop, that just never occurred to me.

Ive got one called test map, it has a large flat ground, with forest and mountain area attached to it, ready to build

You can also try using the World Editor.

I have to say, building on Wood is really, really cool. It brought me back to the fun times I used to have before the major Wood redesign which made it impossible to build on Wood in the first place. With the new system, my old Warehouse is no longer viable, but I've come up with a new an even better design. Yes, I did post it earlier in the thread, but it bears repeating because now it actually WORKS :)

I believe this is about as good of a use of space as I can make it. Every stockpile can be accessed from at least two blocks, every path is at least two blocks wide and it can be built without requiring any scaffolding or additional architecture. I can't quite make this using the game's "proper" doors, bit I don't like the 3-block-tall rectangular doors anyway.

Here's how I built this: I start with the central staircase which is self-supporting and uses the stairs to let Bricktrons up. With the wood bracing, it allows a wood beam to extend all the way out to the freestanding double-columns. To build them, I build the inner one two blocks tall and the outer one one block tall. This allows Brictrons to use the outer column as a "step" in order to put the third block onto the inner column, which allows them to reach it from the beam extending out of the central staircase. I then build the exterior wall with a "brick wedge" missing so Bricktrons can use the missing bricks to climb. I only build the wall up to the second layer of bricks, whereupon Bricktrons can place down the third block in the wall-side columns. At that point, those columns can be reached from the double columns via a single beam, and from there Bricktrons can reach the exterior wall. With access to all parts of the site, Bricktrons can then build everything else without issue.

This is a ton of fun to do, and what I spent most of today doing - I got the warehouse up to the fourth floor now. I'm still having issues with Stockpiles, though - which ones the Bricktrons use and how much of a performance hit they create. I'll probably make a separate thread on AI and stockpiles. The above screenshot is from a Workshop map and not the Big Island, which undoubtedly helps.

Yep, it works now. And they are still continuing to improve the game, slowly but surely, so that's a good sign.

Well, I kept playing this save file so it's not exactly the same, but I have a much more advanced one with two buildings. One of them had to be put sort of on stilts to put them on the same level. The idea was to link the two of them via a sky bridge on level 3, but technical performance has degraded too much to continue working on the project. Still, feel free to have a look at the save file. I'm pretty proud of it, myself :)
