Sad that mark kern is starting to be hailed as a hero
I'm reading in the negative reviews of the game how "since mark kern left the game's been going to ♥♥♥♥".

You're talking about a guy who would leave the office for weeks at a time without any contact with the dev team, come back and ask everyone to scrap everrything and start from scratch, and had anger fits like steve jobs when someone contradicted him.

this is the guy who build a 1 million dollar firefall van before the game was even in beta

there's a whole article out there about everything he did horribly inside red5 and WHY he was actually canned, spread the word and let's not hail this monster as a misunderstood martyr, this guy is trash

I wish I could find more pre-open beta videos to show the old systems, like the lateral tier work of the old frame unlocking as sidegrades instead of how one system had us grind a frame to 40, earn tokens to unlock more frames and such, or how the current iteration was "start as a accord, change to non-accord at 20".

And it's already been proven that Brainkatana and Brutalwhimsy were The9 parrot shills. On top of the fact that firefall reddit is very anti-kern and kern saying that his replies to the brutalwhimsy topic were effectively downvoted to oblivion, one has to wonder how many downvoters were shills/disgruntled employees and how many were triggered users at the abuse.

As for what Kern himself believes though, two articles during firefall's open beta sum up his stance and what we ended up seeing after his departure.

Interesting article.
Kern does give the impression of trying to limit potential mistakes and trying to minimize any fears of crowd-funding catastrophes. Breaking the development down to milestones isn't exactly new territory in project management, so I assume his deliberate mention was also to calm fears of him going off the rails.

As for the then-and-now comparison, it's really nothing we haven't seen coming. Everybody in development circles wants everyone else to fund the next big thing so they don't have to invest more than neccessary. I'm sure at this point most companies are having nightmares about having to actually take risks on coming up with something that's actually different.
Hell, at this point I would even take StarWars Galaxies:CU edition over the garbage that's out there. But it's been proven the majority of players do not want complexity, they want to scratch the "I Won" itch.
firefall is like warframe for me. tons of potential, zero execution.
The problem with an MMO is that it needs to provide for both the instant gratification players AND the people who want to work on complex problems and go for longterm rewards. Trying to have your cake and eat it too is an incredibly difficult balancing act for any development house. Make it too easy to get high powered rewards and you will lose the longterm players, and these are essential to any game as they will still be playing long after the instant gratification twits have left to find their next fix.

Firefall had a viable effective method for doing this with people having to search the landscape for high quality minerals to thump, and then having to choose a risk vs reward style game with their chosen difficulty of thumper. What really killed the game was the constant wholesale changing of the equipment and skilltrees, No one likes uncertainty, not wallstreet, not government, and certainly not video gamers. Why keep playing a game when tomorrow you might find all your hard work undone because the devs can't make up their mind and pick a final layout.

Mark Kerns constant need to change the entire design of the game killed Firefall as surely as an axe to the server box would have. By the time the 9 were brought in, they were a desperate last ditch effort to prop up a slowly dying game. As much as I love firefall, and I hope someday there will be another game like it, I fear that its history may have poisoned the well of action/RPG/MMO hybrids for a very long time.
in the end everyone dropped the ball with firefall. no matter where they pushed it, it failed, even the versions I loved. Early beta's had incredible amount of players with kern. But, they were also tons of people that left under him too. The same with pez and the9. The problem I see is that not one version of firefall felt 100% complete. I blame the engine they chose. It couldn't deliver the things they wanted out of firefall and it performed horribly on modern hardware. Anyway after the9 took over and they released 1.3 that's when I started to really like firefall and I've seen the earlier builds of this game. v1.3 to me was the best of them all. It just lacked a proper ending to the story

People have been saying this for years, I made an entire thread about this stuff. People just don't read. Nobody think he's a hero, are you dumb?

Why did you change your old avatar
why is this suddenly showing up as if it had new comments? theres nothing new here, just dead threads.
^ i got the same thing
I didn't want to be reminded of this, looking at the mouldering corpse of a once mighty game is sad.
i wouldn't say it was mighty but it definitely had a ton of promise.
Oh dude. Still when it was broken in the last version 1.6 it played better than any mmo and the fact that it was a great fps next to AAA fps games out there makes this game not only mighty. It was magnificent

By the way. I saw this today. https://youtu.be/DSi2PkiLQLY
I've never had a problem with kern until today. I found this video arrogant and insulting. Cause this video sounds to me like a respond to everyone that ever gave him an idea for ember in the ember forum. I think that the fans were making him mad with "I want this and I want that". Fact is nothing comes from nothing. Everything comes from an idea first. Gotta tell ya, there's a lot stupidity being talked about in this video

to each his own of course, but I spent a helluva lot of time playing the game, i loved the action mmo premise of it, even when my beloved bastion got repeatedly nerfed into the ground. I'd play it again, warts and all, if they brought it back. Hell, just wandering around the world they built was fun, so many little things in nooks and crannies to find.
