Open the Settings window by clicking Steam, then Settings. Navigate to Controller and click on General Controller Settings. If your gamepad is detected, it should appear to the left under a list of Gamepad options. Check the box marked Generic Gamepad for now. Click on your controller, a few new buttons should pop up. Click Define Layout. The rest should be pretty simple from there. When you're done, click Save
If your controller is missing buttons, then don't worry. I have 2 controllers with this kind of issue, and both work just fine for what I set them as, including in other games. As long as you have what you want, you can leave some blank
Steam has full ps4 controller support however, but I don't want to use Steam's.
