With error messages, do you means "File error" white stub on the card? In general, video playback is handled by Unity engine, I can't do much about it. Support for different video formats and codecs varies between platforms. Much also depends on what codecs you have installed. MP4 won't run on Linux. I have detailed articles about video support in Discord (see "for creators" section). Some users did conversions between formats to make sure that videos work for them. In general, GIF decoding is inefficient, so I kept recommending to convert to MP4.
