A lot of people want a chat box but it is being phased out of gaming in general because of alleged toxicity and safety reasons that require moderator intervention. Which is extra work = it costs money.

Which is nonsense when you think about the core reason because if someone calls you a c**t on chat or voice the message is the same. Voice is even worse. I guess the difference is that voice leaves no log but written chat does.

So, better get used to pings and emotes if you don't like using voice because chat is not only not coming but don't expect it in other new releases. Honestly, last bastion of the chat box that is still usable and normal is Deep Rock Galactic. Monster Hunter has so many filters you can barely talk. To give another example, Creative Assembly actually patched out chatbox from Total War games, even the old ones.

In fact, its because of an USA law that got delayed in the congress year after year until it didnt.

The law, which aimed for more inclusivity, required the games to have text to speech and speech to text if it had any kind of text chat.

Result: most of USA developed games skipped text chat.

European games which didnt have this law had text chat.

Big examples: Helldivers2 or Deep Rock Galactic (or vermintide), games with a lot of friendly fire / mess up oportunities = possible toxicity. But they have text chat and not even a filter or reporting others.

https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/ac5pvq/video_games_in_us_will_now_require_text_to_speech/?rdt=34042

And many other sources.

Thats not the reason tho
I for one hate chat box. It clutters the screen and is completely immersion breaking. I'm all for the addition of one so long as I can completely disable it. Not minimized, gone.
Devs have said it's something they'll look into and consider for a future patch.
@MeGa

I heard it was about some UK law that's basically about "protecting the children" in the internet space. Well, if it's more of a USA created "problem" then sorry for misinformation.

From the sources I posted:

"As of January 1, 2019, any new game released is required by law to have certain accessibility options under US law.

Failure to do this could potentially lead to fines and other legal trouble from the FCC.
In 2010, President Barack Obama signed the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (CVAA). This law required companies to provide accessibility options in media and communications services, for those with disabilities.

Among other things, it applies to ““playable games on any hardware or online platform, including game applications that are built into operating system software.”

If your game is playable, you’d better pay attention.

The specific portion of the game that we’re dealing with is what the FCC refers to as “advanced communications services.” This means any of the following built into a game:

interconnected voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service;
non-interconnected VoIP service;
electronic messaging service, such as e-mail, instant messaging, and SMS text messaging; and
interoperable video conferencing service"

Thats the reason. Not a gossip or rumour at all.

Sure, if you say so. I'm just saying that I heard various devs and other ppl citing other things. The thing you posted seems to be bigger and is most likely the main reason.

If not a chat box I at least ask for some emotes for communication, a simple wave/hello and a goodbye specially when host is waiting for more players.
A good benchmark for cooperative and even competitive games is to have ALL features available, but people can opt-in to varying levels of communication, including :

- Open Voice Comms
- PTT only Voice Comms
- Filtered Text Chat
- Unfiltered Text Chat
- Global Chat
- Team-Only Chat
- Quick Chat (predefined fixed messages which are good for multilingual communication)
- Team-Only Quick Chat

and of course
- complete radio silence lol

Left 4 Dead, Darktide, Vermintide 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Payday 2, Starship Troopers Extermination are all co-op games with text chat.

I'd say the reason it's not in the game is they ran out of time to add it, pretty much no game company seems to abide by that law you guys were talking about, nor does it seem to get enforced.

Text chat will get added, we just have to be patient.

Nah, they are pre law like l4d, developed in EU like Vermintide, Darktide, DRG, or have text to speech etc included. Or developed pre 2009.

That seems like a good law, tbh. TTS is one of the most absurdly easy things to add to any application, tons of free solutions, not an onerous requirement.

If any company is using that as an excuse, it's just that: An excuse. They just don't want to have to deal with the ongoing costs involved with moderation, and if someone calls you a racial slur over voice, you can't screenshot it and send them a complaint, so they don't have to deal with it.

Nah, it doesnt have anything to do with moderation or its costs.

Its just a law requirement that forces USA developers to spend alot to implement text chat, cause text to speech, speech to text etc are costly.

Helldivers 2, deep rock galactic, vermintide, darktide...have text chat, without moderation or even report functions, cause they dont have to follow that law.

Opinions are cool, but facts are facts.
