Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap

Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap

Disappointing, especially for the price.
I have had every single run end with a game breaking bug. Dying and never respawning. Enemies never coming. Getting stuck somewhere.

There's little balance to the game. Solo difficulty ramps so damn quickly, that any mob that isn't a basic orc becomes a guaranteed rift point loss.

The maps are too open for barricades to be limited. I find myself doing the same barricade pattern each map because there's little variation that can be made. There doesn't need to be such huge maps.

There's a thousand threads and a handful of traps. I thought this was tower defense, not knitting.

The character skills are probably the most creative part of the game, and even they aren't anything special.

I highly regret buying this game and hope to see updates making major improvements, or this will be the last game of the series that I buy.

Damn I'm sorry that you've been running into so many issues :(

I've had that "Can't respawn" bug twice so far, both times when dying JUST as a wave is entering the 'Slow mo' phase. I've personally never experienced a wave not spawning enemies though, except for Ghostfang in co-op. Play with even ONE other player and he spawns already dead!

Personally, I don't think there's going to be any major, sweeping changes to the game though. The intention was to have a 2 ~ 4 co-op game and the game's balanced around that. We're only a week into the game's life though, they're looking into solo balancing and have already made some tweaks in that regard with more to come. There's more to do there though, but solo is certainly not impossible!

Upcoming Alchemist provides buffs for our runs, perhaps that will help some however...

More traps are definitely going to come as well, but if the core of Deathtrap isn't enjoyable, chances are no amount of updates will alleviate that for you. There's always the first three games to play though, they're never going anywhere! (Except for Unchained... RIP Unchained. Deathtrap seems to have taken quite a bit of inspiration from it in fact.

Some people talk about Early Access level polish for the game.
It's particularly worrying with the price tag of the game, especially in this economy.

Orcs Must Die 3 was also $30, but it offers more content. Smaller maps, but a lot more of them + more traps. Maybe if they had an actual Early Access at reduced price to get that 'polish'? Most of the mis-balancing seems to be on the solo/duo side however, I guess that makes sense given it was built around 3 ~ 4 players...

Speaking of OMD3, I remember on release it was Mixed for a while too. Hopefully Deathtrap will get out of that flunk soon, since it'd be terribly disappointing to see it go the way of Unchained.

Don't listen to the "It's Early Access" rubbish. "Early Access" is an overused and misrepresented complaint that the kids spam these days. Every game released these days is apparently early access. But the fact is, it's not early access; it's perfectly fine and you get a good game for the asking price. It's not missing anything and it's playable start to finish.

Right now it's been released for under a week and Devs are tweaking stuff based on the 'real world' feedback. They have a roadmap of sorts with plans to add more stuff, but to say it's "Early Access" is disingenuous and categorically false. Almost all of the complaints are because it's too much of a departure from the original Orcs Must Die! franchise. It's just a video game for light entertainment, people need to chill the ♥♥♥♥ out.

Would I like more stuff like maps, and characters, and new traps etc ? Of course! But right now I'm looking at what I got for my $30 and it's a pretty good deal entertainment per hours wise - myself and friends are having heaps of fun with it.

Oh man, I so agree with that. "X is like Early Access" gets tossed around so much, but... Like, assuming this WAS an Early Access game it'd be a heck of a robust one and at least nearing end-of-EA stage. So many EA's get abandoned halfway through with entire chunks of the actual game missing, or take years to get to this point.

There is ONE thing that Deathtrap is actually genuinely missing though, well actually two. The Alchemist, who provides buffs for your runs before you depart, and playable Gabriella.

One good thing though, is that folks who don't like Deathtrap's core gameplay still can play OMD1, 2, and 3. Deathtrap takes a bit more from Unchained than the classics, and we can't really go back to that one (Well, there's a way but...)
I'm positive that a classic-run OMD4 will be in the future, if Deathtrap ends up doing well enough to justify it. Side-games are okay, and I'm happy to see developers experiment. I still want to explore their world in greater detail, ever since Unchained expanded it - but sadly, those are dreams unlikely ever to be.....
