No unlocked characters, no introduction training

Right after i start the game (select a slot for save file) for the first time that little robot appears without any directions what to do. There wasn't even any kind of a welcome message that is supposed to be there. There are also 0 available characters, every single one requires some kind of point to unlock.

the only available quest is "Arrive in ACE" that seems to have already been completed (even though i haven't)

Current objective seems to be to talk to that giant screen which cannot be interacted with.

Is this how it's supposed to be? Am i missing something? All of the youtube walkthroughs show a completely different game

Same thing is happening to me. Also on macOS. I'm guessing it's related to the recent update.

Not sure if it helps, but you might want to use your mouse for "talking". I had the same problem where I was using a controller and it wouldn't actually activate the conversation. It seems that the coding that involves controller commands is quite funky right now, at least for me. It randomly decides I "cancelled" instead of accept and other shenanigans.
