You should never be late on timer before Phase 5.
In the early phases, Tactics and Potential choices are crucial to gain as much time as possible for later phases. In those early phases, some characters performance seems to be very tied to specific potentials (looking at you Noel's Bloom Trigger)
The timer can't kill you, you'll survive as long as you avoid a direct hit.
HP Mixtures and Revives (1 through Sortitio, 9 possible through Black Market and if you wish so, 1 right out the start with a specific mind cristal),
Most SP potentials and somes moves have invincibility frames, abuse them when facing hard to avoid attacks.
Perfect clear of Elites grants a buff and removes all debuffs. Obviously, the more buffs and the less debuffs the better for you.
There is 2 optional Boss in phase 5. It's up to you if the potential they gives is worth the time and HP.
I don't know if that actually helps you, but those are my tips.
