What does Fresh Start carry over?

I got out of the habit of using YNAB for a while because it wasn't working well with how extreme my account was fluctuating vs. my minimal outflows, but now that I'm in a more stable situation I wanted to start over. So I did. The Fresh Start button said it would carry over all the categories I had set up which sounded perfect, but on actually going through with it, my custom categories and subcategories were nowhere to be found, and categories I had previously removed were back. Obviously this isn't a *huge* issue since I don't plan on restarting again, but did I misinterpret what Fresh Start actually does or do something wrong?

Did you actually do a Fresh Start or did you create a new budget instead?

It looks like what happened is I started a new budget, cancelled that, and then went to Fresh Start -- at which point it carried over my categories from the "new" budget that I didn't actually create. Went back and did a Fresh Start from the backup and it carried over my categories, but also a balance that was nearly a year out of date. I was able to reconcile it, but I still had some old debt carrying over that I didn't feel like finding so gave up and went back to the new budget. It'd be nice if there was an option that completely zeroed *everything* out, kept your categories, and asked you for your starting balance much like creating a new budget.

If your starting balances were incorrect after the Fresh Start you should simply edit them to match your bank accounts today. Try it again!
