How to split stack item

I'd like to know too. The only time I have seen it is the game makes you put your 'offerings' into portal shrines one at a time - which messed me up when I first came across it because stacks seem to only move AS stacks every place else in the game.

If you hold shift and click it moves one item from a container to inventory or vice versa. Have not figured out how to split stack yet though
