Building and farming mandatory?

When I read the store page, I get an indication I can choose to be an adventurer and level up and loot and kill crap OR I can decide to be a farmer OR something else. Is that the gist of the game? Or is farming and building mandatory similar to Enshrouded or Valheim so you can progress, or can NPCs provide weapons and such to me?

It's not mandatory. They don't provide buffs in the same way as Valheim they are mostly for hunger management.

You can pretty much buy most things from vendors.
