oh yeah i agree, the level design was better than the first but they changed the gameplay and because of that it's unique identity. I still enjoyed it but not nearly as much as the first.
In many games, if you have 99/100 shotgun shells and grab an ammunition pickup worth 20 shells, you'll only gain one shell, while the remaining 19 shells are wasted. Additionally, once you've reached the hard cap of 100 shells, you'll be unable to pickup any additional ammo until you've dropped below said cap.
However, in FMF2, if your baseline is 30/30, you'll similarly be able to pickup ammo as soon as you drop to 29/30, but if a small pickup is worth 30 shells, and a large is 150, grabbing a small ammo pickup will give you 30/59, while the large will be 30/179, as opposed to just giving you one shell.
This is why your maximum ammo in reserve is always changing.
That said, it can be confusing if you swap weapons a lot, since the value of each pickup changes depending on what weapons you're using. The value of a bullet pickup is different depending on if you're using the Revolver or Eternal Fish, for example.
The only way to really know if you're above or below your cap is by the display color of the ammo value (green is above, white is below).
