Base Defense Mechanics
Has anyone tested how the Horde Mechanics work in depth yet?

My friend has a base with a massive field of sporadic crappy spikes, and none of it seems to take any damage. I tried to create a solid defensive line 2-3 layers deep just outside my walls with spikes, floor traps, and crushers and they seem to be able to destroy about 1/4 of the defenses every raid.

Is there a range factor to the horde that it'll not damage structures so far away from the player, but still get stuck and kill itself on the spikes? Can the Horde spawn in a massive trap field, or will it always spawn a set distance away from any player structures?

the horde spawns in a huge bubble around the players location. however : these is areas where nothing is allowed to spawn on a certain ground areas like cliffsides etc or inside dungeons. and also : enemies cannot spawn on top of player placed traps and structures.

this means that if your base is massive enough nothing will spawn simply. and if nothing spaswns nothing or very little gets damage but you still get the full reward choices currently (which is a reason of early access and wont stay like that) no matter how many enemies you have killed. of course you dont get any exp then but exp is faster to farm via normal combat during day anyway as the high level enemies there grant way more exp per kill.

If it is his game he might have tweaked the settings as well. By default the player-made stuff takes way more damage than 'unowned' structures.

In default settings I'd only worry about fighting the dead for the first 10 nights or so, enough to unlock 'double jump' and max out the active abilities. After that it's easier for peace of mind to either relocate to a dungeon/cliff to minimize combat, or just burn a Stone at the shrine and only fight every 2-3 days when you're built up and want more XP.
