Can't use the altar to get to brownbeard.

I got in to do the boss brownbeard, i rotated the altar and got in but i was to low level so i got out again. But after the latest patch i can't get in there again and rotate the altar. Just says that i have already activated the altar. Help?

Are you able to target the top of the altar and press Z?

i dont understand the altar - what must i do - i can rotate the altar but what combination?
