Just downloaded a Steam update and Wolfenstein 3D no longer works says there is a problem with the DOS Emulator. When can I expect this to be resolved.

Fixed , Go edit Wolf3d.conf in Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Wolfenstein 3D\base and chage output=ddraw to output=overlay - simples

I just tried that. It lets me get a few seconds into DOSBOX and then it crashes again anyway. can't get any further with any of the other output modes either.

Yep, just want to confirm it very suddenly stopped working on me too. They broke something. I'll try your fix, peter.mercer.

Ultimate Doom, Master Levels for Doom II and Final Doom are all having this issue. Along with all the DOS based Heretic/Hexen games. Bizarrely Doom II works fine.

Theres more discussion about this here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/2270/discussions/0/405690850602610300/

And here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/2280/discussions/0/412446292755356004/

Hopefully Valve will figure this out.

Try changing output=ddraw to output=overlay in dosbox.conf instead of wolf3d.conf

This also fixes Spear of Destiny

If it's the same problem some of us are having changing the output in dosbox.conf won't make any diffrence see these threads:

Strange. I have those same three batch files in my installation, but I've got both Wolfenstein3D and Spear of Destiny running right now. OS is Windows 10 x64, GPUs are GTX 980Ti

It also looks as though this issue affects other Steam games that use DOSBox (System Shock I, WWII GI, etc.). Going through the rest of them in my library.

There was a Steam update yesterday; could that have had something to do with it? Not like we have any choice whether or not to accept these, though.

I don't think it would be the steam client, it would make more sence if those games had updates themselves, though it does seem interesting that there a number of id titles that are involved.

I managed to fix Ultimate Doom so you guys may be able to adapt this fix to Wolf or other DOS games.

In the dosbox.conf file and the ultimatem.conf (Or the equivalent for the game you're trying to fix) there is a line:

fulldouble=

Make sure they're set to false in both

fulldouble=false

Find output= in both. Set them:

output=ddraw

In ultimatem.conf (Or the game file for your specific game) find aspect= set that true

aspect=true

Finally if you're having trouble with dual monitors find fullresolution= in both and set them to 1920x1080 (or your resolution)

fullresolution=1920x1080

Sorry if I dumbed it down too much, I just wanted to make it easy enough for anyone to follow.

Tried both of these fixes and they did not work. Any other updates on this?

i have two games that uses dosbox emulator, one is wolf 3D, and the other is Blake Stone Aliens of Gold, Blake Stone works perfectly fine, but i try and get into wolf 3D there is an issue with the dosbox

I have the game, but I don't have Dosbox in my computer files anywhere. Do i need to install it from the website or what?
I found out something that may fix the problem of all those DOS games. You go to C:/PrgramFiles(x86)/Steam/steamapps/common, and from there find the DOS games that wont start. Go to the base of said game that's giving you trouble, and finally go to the Application of dosbox. Right click on the Icon and go to properties. From there go to compatibility and run the dosbox in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3). It's worked like a charm ever since I did that.
