Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein 3D

How to mod Wolfenstein 3D (or it's ports/remakes) easily?
Hello everyone,

I'd like to change some of the wall textures and enemies (and possibly sounds they make).
Would it be easier to change these things in the original Wolfenstein 3D or some of its ports/remakes? If it's the second option, which port/remake would be easiest to mod? What tools should I use and how? Again, the main thing I'm interested in is changing wall textures and changing enemies appereance and animation (and if it's possible, also their sounds).

Thanks for any info on the topic.

Are you kidding? Of course I googled it. I found some tools, but lot of them only run under DOS. There are some sites with tools for download, but I have yet to find a step by step tutorial that tells you everything you need to do. I asked because there might be someone who already modded Wolfenstein 3D and knows the best way, not because I wanted some smartass to tell me I should google it. Do you visit every topic asking for advice and tell them to "google it"? :steamfacepalm:

Try visiting the ECWolf website. The creator has a PDF-file laying around either on the website or the forum hyperlink on there.

EDIT: Googling ECWolf will actually bring up a link on how to mod it using the sourceport if you wanna try ECWolf. ECWolf makes most of the things you've mentioned "e-c"!

There's all kinds of mods for ECWolf, like HD mods such as this[forum.zdoom.org] one.

Thanks for info, Gumbemanden. ECWolf is very good for easy modding. For swapping textures/sprites/sounds I just used SLADE to browse and modify the pk3 file and that's it. Nice and simple.

If anyone's interested in the topic, here are the PDF files on modding ECWolf:
http://maniacsvault.net/ecwolf/files/tutorials/ecwolfedit1.pdf
http://maniacsvault.net/ecwolf/files/tutorials/ecwolfedit2.pdf

Here is download link to SLADE:

This is the second top result when you search "how to mod wolfenstein 3d". Why say anything at all if you can't help?

There are many tools available since the DOS days that can make modding easier, for most ports.

Probably the most robust "suite" of tools available is WDC, a Windows-based editor that lets you edit most elements of the files, as well as export maps to ECWolf/LZWolf if that is your jam.

For your goal (replacing images) it will depend on your needs, as both Slade+ECWolf/LZWolf and WDC+original Wolf3D will work fine for changing those things.

If all your images are 64x64 in size, you won't need to worry about which you use. If you have images of 128x128, you'll need to either use ECWolf/LZWolf or make some minor changes to the DOS or Wolf4SDL (the Windows port) engine.
Images of other or varying sizes will either need a lot deeper changes to the engine, or ECWolf/LZWolf.

If you ever need more help with Wolf3D modding or want to show off your stuff, we have a Discord community at https://discord.gg/Fee7PBY !

And I also have a small sub-site started at http://faq.wolf3d.net where I attempt to write a few guides on things.

Good luck with creating!

Why get angry at a *four year old post*, especially when said post has detailed instructions on how to find modding resources?
