planetary resource mining
How do you mine resources on planets? I can't seem to figure out how to mine strategic or trade resources.

I've built a starbase near a planet. I've read that I need to build a mining base, but I don't see that option. I see military, economic, and cultural.

Thank you.

You can only mine resources located in space, not on the planets. A resource must be within 5 hexes of the starbase in order for the mining option to be available.

All planetary resources are active when you colonize the planet. Planetary bonuses are also active; however, tile bonues are not active until you build the appropriate building.

Nope still don't get it. I have a planet with Prometheus Stone. I can't built any ships that require Prometheus. What tech do I need to mine it?

You cannot build mines on planets - You build (depending on your race the name varies) a Starbase Constructor ship....take that to the area in space with resources you wish to claim (mine) - you construct your starbase...and build/add mining modules to that base.....your base can only claim (mine) resources that are within it's sphere of influence (5 hexes any direction from the base) - if you wish to claim (mine) an ancient relic your base will need to have the appropriate module added to it for that as well - To add modules bring more contructors to that base (some Ideologies and racial traits allow your bases to start with modules already).

What Seel is asking about are the resources that pop up on the planets themselves.

Seel you automatically get those and they provide boosts to your civilization, if you hover over the resource on the planet, it will tell you what bonuses that they provide to you, there is no requirement for you to actually mine those resources.

Yeah I hope they change that though, it seems like a kind of a wasted gameplay aspect to just be able to auto gain use of it. I think it would add a lot to the gameplay if there were special buildings you could research for and then and only then do you get any benefit from the planet side resources.

WRT the Prometheus Stone - it doesn't generate Prometheum for your empire; you only get that from space mining.

Ok. I guess I haven't seen the space based resources yet. And yes, I was assuming I needed to build something on the planet. It does seem like a wasted gameplay element.

Thanks everyone.

Are you talking about the base game or Crusade? In Crusade you can build a planetary facility on the planetary resource that will generate quantities of it over time in a similar fashion to those found in space.

Anything on the surface of a planet will require constructing a building to exploit it, and may also require having the right techs in order to build it. You will have to examine your tech tree carefully.
