Trade Routes?
How do i set up a trade route?

Picked the 1st trader trait and got a free freighter.
Sent it to some of my planets, nothing happens.
Sent it to friendly, alien planets further away. Nothing happens.
Checked commands, nothing there.
Checked input options, can't find a key.

What am i missing?

it takes a while for them to get there. When you get it you designate a home port, then send it to a foreign planet. Then wait......

What do you mean by "get there" ? I moved the freighter to multiple other planets by rightclicking (just as in GCII) but nothing happens except they make a normal move and stop next to the targeted planet.

Exactly HOW do i designate a homeport?

Normally one selects one of the planets sponsoring the shipyard which built the freighter as the home trading planet at the start of the turn, but there has been a lack of user interface to do this when acquiring a freighter by other means. This functionality maybe still is lacking in version 1.02 which went live a few hours ago? I haven't had the opportunity yet to check this out.

Yea..sounds like a home port issue since selecting it is kind of in your face. Starting a game now to see if I can duplicate this.

The home port is set by where it was built. If the shipyard is supported by multiple colonies, you get a pop up giving you a choice. Once built, it has to sail all the way to an alien colony and be moved onto the colony hex. The trade route is then established and a dashed line will appear showing the route.

It's useful to pick one of your larger colonies and build your trade ships there, leaving a tile to build a trade capital. Just send each freighter to a different alien colony as they are built. You can check the trade tab after hitting the govern button on the upper left of the galaxy display to check how many routes you have available and how much you are making. If it says
2/3 for example, it means you have 2 routes available and one is functioning.

Research trade to get more routes.

Yup. seems to be an issue, I couldn't figure out how to set the free freighter, even researched more routes in case that was it to no avail.

Normally, you set the home port when it is built.

If you fail to select a home planet when you initially get the freighter then you never get the opportunity again. Hopefully, this will get corrected with version 1.1 later this month.

Related question: Since trade routes are shown on the map, is there a way to 'raid' them? What is the functionality of the line connecting the planets? Just a visual reminder or is there some way to disrupt that trade route militarily?
Even better: Do it with stealthed ships, so the enemy doen't notice what's up. That would be neat.

Yes you can raid them. You just have to place a military ship on the route and it starts to take credits. I think it will eventually dissolve the route as well but I could be wrong on that.

Thanks for clearing this up guys. Will try building my own freighters. :)

Yes you do, just send the ship to a spacedock and have it enter it then eject it and select the new home port. I do this with my trade planets, build the ships else where faster send to my shutdown dock linked to the planet I use for trade and eject and select the new home world.

Also need to make sure you select a planet that isn't yours to make a trade route, so send it off to another empire to make the trade route .

BigNorthMxO, that's the first time I've heard about this method, and it sounds obvious now that you mention it. Thanks for the tip!

No problem. :) Works with colony ship also. send them out with .5 pop to another planet/shipyard with more people and then eject from that planet and pick the new pop you want on the ship!

OK thanks, I'll give it a try. Is there some UI element that I can see which will indicated the that the trade route is being raided? It also doesn't look like the AI does this, unfortunately. :/
