starting positions
one of my only gripes about galciv 2 was that your starting position could give you an enormous advantage or disadvantage -- players that start in a corner don't have to worry about defending their backs, but also have fewer choice planets to claim early in the game. Players dropped in the center of the map have plenty of planets but can be clobbered by six neighbors early on.

If something could be worked into the game to mitigate these issues, it would be great. perhaps some sort of wraparound map, so there are no "edges", or just making sure that all players have equitable starting placement.

Sounds to me like its balanced. Either you are in a corner and don't have to worry about your back but you are limited in planets or you get lots of planet choices but have to be more concerned with defense. Its an either/or choice.
An option to pick one or the other would be nice though.

I agree with Ryat. I think that's fairly balanced. I do have a related gripe of my own though: does the border of the map has to be so close to the stars/planets? There should be a no man's land of sort, an arbitrary 10 tiles for example, where you could maneuver a bit and not get directly blocked at the edge like a hockey ring.

Why not just have a wrap-around galaxy? Would bring more strategic options to the game.

Mash "Control + N" to make a new galaxy until you're satified! :D

Holy baby Jesus! You just made my life so much easier. Why didn't I know that?

But... still. There's ALWAYS a solar system somewhere that's just so ridiculously close to the edge of the map... I guess I just won't get over it. :P

Sometimes I spend hours trying to get a good setup. My record is 2 1/2 hours :D

It's strangely addicting, and it really pays off in the end.

I recommend giving the AI the advantage with the number of stars, it makes the game more challenging!
