No pirates, but pirates?
Just like the title suggests, I have a problem.

In the game setup, I turned off pirate bases... and yet... pirates just annexed one of my planets... how is this possible?

Has anyone else had this happen?

I believe the setting is for the shipyards and ships that hassle you (white color for the pirate faction). The annex is an event that happens to contain the word pirate.

*Eyeroll* I didn't want pirates at all, hence the no pirate bases. I figured that meant no pirates bases or planets (like a base in my opinion).

I understand. Pirate planets are not a normal thing, though, just one somewhat rare event that you just happened across. Normal pirates have nothing but a shipyard and some crappy ships that try to kill anything they can catch. I think I have seen this event exactly once in 20+ games. The event isnt tied to these guys... its one of a great many random things that happen in the universe to break up the click boost economy click end of turn monotony. I am just a fellow player, I can do no more beyond try to explain the difference and why its not considered by the no pirate button.

think of them as rebel scum if it helps, or if that isnt good enough, you can cut the event out of the list, it is a text file.

It's fine now, I put an influence starbase like right next to the planets (they'd had one, annexed mine) and now they are both mine, but I am still mopping up their 6 or 7 mini fleets of ships.

The other way that you can end up with pirates is if a civilization is destroyed but doesn't surrender its assets to someone else. Their remaining ships/shipyards/starbases will switch to the 'pirate' faction next turn.
