I feel your pain but I did find that once I had a little more grip on the game it wasn't as shattering as all that. Still want it myself and some system of labels on the map that let me know what places are since they are referred to in quests but not on the existing map. Things like coastal roadblock and coastal city? There aren't that many places that could fit the latter but the first one? So confusing at times.
Hey survivor!
We take heavy inspiration from games like DayZ and Tarkov when it comes to locating where your character is. The best tip I could give would be to find a road, then follow the road until you see one of the many road signs placed on each road!
However, much like what stretch said, using the mountain with the radio tower on top is a great starting point! A little tip, the radio tower is always pointing towards the safe zone. :D
