Multiplayer Connection Guide - UPDATE VPN Support Beta Patch Live!
Update

Hi everyone, we've made a patch available with features that will multiplayer for people without open internet connections easier. For more information, see this topic.

End of Update

Configuring Online Play: Age of Wonders uses a P2P networking model and this requires that other users can connect to your computer. When the game tells you that your connection is not properly setup the problem is most likely that your router blocks all incoming connections. Tips:

Enable UPnP on Your Router: This is the preferred option as UPnP is a protocol that automates port forwarding to your computer. If your router supports this then enable this setting and the game will auto configure your router.

Manually Forward a Port on Your Router: Login on your router and forward TCP port 14800 to the local IP of your computer. Some routers have additional firewall settings make sure TCP port 14800 isn’t blocked.

To check if your port is actually open, you can use canyouseeme[www.canyouseeme.org]

Enable DMZ on Your Router: If the above doesn’t work, try to place your computer in the DMZ of your router. Only do this when you run a proper firewall on your computer!
Check Firewall Settings If you still have issues it might be that the firewall on your computer is blocking the connection. Make sure AoW3.exe is added to the exception rules and public access is enabled. Double check if the exception rule itself is enabled. On company / university networks you might not be able to configure the router. It’s very likely you cannot play AoW3 multiplayer from these locations. (But you might be able to host a Local Game)

Multiple computers behind the same router: Age of Wonders will automatically configure your router when UPnP is enabled. If you manually forwarded ports on your router you need to make sure that each computer uses a different port number and forward the different ports separately. In the Launcher you can change the port number the game uses under “Misc Settings”.

Local Games: If you are hosting a purely local game on one network please use the “Local” option. Matchmaking is still handled through our server, but this option lets you easily connect with players on your local network.

Some additional tips:
  • Check if your router has a firewall.
  • If there are multiple routers on your network before you reach the internet, be sure to enable 'bridge mode'.

bridged, forwarded, opened up ports on multiple routers and modems, still (even though it works with other games that have problems) NOTHING
Have tried everything and all to no avail. Now today I start it up and when I press the button for internet matches the game now instantly locks up and crashes to desktop.
God.. finally managed to fix it for myself. Now thats all fine and stuff BUUUUTT im an ICT student and it still took me 3-4 hours to figure out what was wrong.

Having to set multiple port forwarders on even my modem (aside from my router ofcourse), give half the electronic hybrid DHCP and then change some more stuff is NOT acceptable .. especially more casual gamers will pull their hairs.

(yes yes.. i know not everyone has the problems)
Could you maybe write a guide or something? ;D
Going to claim reimbursement if that freaking multiplayer doesnt work in 2 weeks.
This is ridiculous. Every other Steam game can figure this out without every user trying mess up their router and firewalls. For this situation, I think they need to get a pro to handle this. This is one of my favorite game series, but AOW2 had the same issue with the router-- did they keep that old code? The world has moved on a long way.
Bah this is the fifth game I have played that crashes withing 6 turns. frustrating. Ports are open on my end... I played shadow magic for years and never had this bad of a connection problems even with heavy mods. Should have been worked out before launch.
Actually havent finished a multiplayer game yet. I preordered and have been gnawing my fingernails in anticipation. bought a few copies for my brothers too. Please fix this issue asap.

My little brother is on a university network and therefore will not ever be able to play this game apparently... That is sad as we are two brothers who love turn based strategy games and have waited years for the chance to play age of wonders 3.

We have tried using other methods like vpn's which usually are able to circumvent this issue, however you've managed to code the game in a way that vpn's are unable to be used...

An update on how you are going to manage these issues would be appreciated... I'm uncertain whether or not hole punching would be enough to solve all the issues but that would be the best way to prevent piracy I suppose... I just wish that we paying costumers (you can check my steam profile, I do have age of wonders 3) didnt have to suffer because of DRM choices.

TLDR: I wish to know whether or not you'll be able to make it so that people on university networks will ever be able to play this game online, or if we'll have to wait for someone to reverse engineer the game so that VPN's can be used.

VPNs can be used right now. Make sure you are using separate ports.
Ну не ужели. А то из-за туповатого ИИ в кампанию не инетресно играть. Мультиплеер немного спасет положение.
To the developers: Will we eventually get an update where we DON'T need to do all that stuff to play online? It's the first game I ever played that requires me to do that, so I don't know how to do it and even if I did, apparently from the comments it drops down your computer's safety, so I don't think I'd actually do it anyway.

Love this game, except for that! Please just make it so that everyone can play online without having to go throught all that crazy stuff. Other games do it, why can't this one do it too?
At first multy didn't work but I just forwarded the 14800 TCP port and it worked
Please make the MP stuff more streamlined. This is ridiculous that I can't get this to work even though I followed all your steps apart from DMZ (a bit much to ask that just to play a game). Come on!
Ok, its the 5th day after release and I still can´t play a game which costed me 40euro and which I only bought to play it in multiplayer with my friends (of which the half [3 person!] can´t play the game either). we will play civ5 tomorrow and think about how we will get our money back.

BYE!
Loved the game, beside the fact i cannot connect to the multiplayer -_-, all you need to do is let steam run the servers and not do this,I Tried,DMZ,Port Forward and firewall and its a no

EDIT:I Removed the aception from my windows firewall and then readded them and now it works
