Lore-wise.. 'stuff' happened. The Shadow Realm was sealed, Frostlings were driven FAR north, the remaining Elves re-united into a single race(as they were during the pre-human time of Antioch), etc.
But they will!!
Triumph Studios have stated that if the game sells well they will support it with DLC and Expansion races. I made a forum topic a long time ago and with about 20 pages worth of votes the top 5 races included Tigrans, Frostlings, Archons, Halflings and Undead. We know we are getting the undead in the form of a class (thats actually an amazing! idea)
Judging by the official forums, steam forums and the youtube comment sections - people are noticing AOW3 and picking it up. So we can hope for those DLC races.
If you havnt already, pick up the game now and increase the odds of getting your facourite races ;)
Keep in mind that AoW 3 has modding support, so people can go in and add back all of the classic races or even new races. I actually prefered playing the "Brave New World" mod in AoW2, which remade every race, added tons of new heroes, units progressed to higher tier units upon reaching gold (Not the next tier unit, but a seperate unique unit such as Human Calvary turning into Heavy Calvary, or something like that) It felt like an entirely different game. Modding can go a very very long way. So it might seem like there's not a lot of race choices, but you have to remember that there's Race/Class combo's, Independants and modding that can fill all of the missing gaps you're looking for.
Shadow Demons/Syrons - I think they were both exclusive to AoW SM because the shadow realm was opened up somehow or another. Now that the Shadow Realm has been closed off, neither Syrons or Shadow Demons can return.
Hobbits - I'm not sure of the whole story, but halfligns have left the valley of wonders, or wherever the game takes place. They still exist, but they arent in the area that the game is taking place in.
Archons - Again not sure how the story goes, but the Archons fell. THEY ARE STILL IN THE GAME, but only as independants, and are undead. Off the top of my head I know that there are crypts that contain Archons, that work like mini cities or recruitment sites. They also are more less still playable by playing Theocrat.
Tigrans/Frostlings/Nomads - I have absolutely no clue what happened to them. Sorry /:
Wood Elves/Dark Elves - They have reunited as High Elves, and through gameplay style, you can almost basically play them as seperate races. For example, you could be Wood Elves by being a good alignment Arch Druid. or a Dark Elf by playing a Evil Sorcerer or Rogue. Its not exactly Dark elves and Wood Elves, but the gameplay is probably highly similar.
Basically only the major races that participate in the games campaign are in the release so far. ALL the others are still around (even the supposed extinct races "could" return).
Halflings are in limited locations (Isle of Aldor, serpent river, etc) and shy away from conflict. They are near the top of the list for DLC as they have always played a huge part in the AoW lore and are much loved by the original and new community (especially with the Hobbit movies of recent times).
Archons buried on Athla after the Circle of Evermore was destroyed rose as the undead.
Highmen/Archons still exist but are hidden away on Athla and/or are on different worlds or continents. But they will return!
Tigrans left beholders in their cities and went for a walk south. The beholders became watchers, and we know little as to what happened to the Tigran people. But they will return!
Nomads are practically defunct as they are humans that live in the desert. If they return it will likely be as a class.
The undead are returning as a class. The necromancer. Its a brilliant idea as then you can have undead units from all races and not just all humans like in other games.
Frostlings are struggling up north fighting the commonwealth. I wont drop any spoilers ;)
Shadow Demons were forced out of Athla in between AoWSM and AoW3 with the help of the Syrons who followed them through the shadow gates which have been sealed away. I wont drop any spoilers ;)
The elves have MOSTLY merged together.THe heads of Triumph Studios themselevs have posted saying that pockets of the original races still exist that cling to the old ways (well.. the new old ways as the High Elves broke apart during AoW1 to found the Dark elves and reinforce the already present Wood Elves :P)
Hmm ok i think ive covered most of the missing races. Let me know if you have any questions :D
That the elves have unified is really cool lore wise in my mind. It also resolves all that wierdo cultural division they had going which kind of annoyed me.
God I hope so. I love Tigrans they deserve their own campaign and everything.
I also hope they add back in Undead at some point, not as just a necromancer class but also as a race, because undead have one of the more fascinating cultures in the game.
For some people the game lacks depth...wait until the 12 AoW2 races are back with perhaps as many classes. If Triumph plays their cards right and really focuses on the uniqueness of each race and class (and improves on the original 6 via patch), the game will be amazing in a few months.
Anyone know what's their planned DLC development schedule like? Once a quarter, once a month, once a year?
I want my Halfling pipe-smoking pony-riding sherrif in a red "bull's eye" coat!
- Halflings have been added (Golden Realms expansion)
- Undead are coming by way of a class (Necromancer) and already exist as dwelling (Archons)
- Frostlings are coming (next expansion/DLC)
