I believe resurgence is one of the spells you can get. I think it's warlord? Any of your heroes that are warlords can get it. Can't remember exactly, I'm sure somebody else knows.

Research strategic spells and eventually you will see it.
If really interested, https://age-of-wonders-3.fandom.com/wiki/Research has detailed description of how it works.

This is a different spell, Phoenix Warrior. It does not help if hero is already dead.

I don't have the spell on my research page right now, is it possible to resurrect my hero at a later stage? Is there a turn limit?

No, there is no turn limit. But you need to have less heroes than max allowed. If you have accepted surrender of AI player, you get its leader as your hero. This way you can have more heroes than max allowed and in this case ressurect hero spell will be disabled for casting.

Is this a recent change? Last I checked, this was a very easy way to exceed the max heroes limit, because it *would* let you resurrect over that limit.

I don't know. I experienced it about 2 years ago. I will check it in my current game to be sure.

The order in which researchable spells appear is mostly random.

There are some hard limits: high level spells of type X (strategic, combat, empire upgrade) only appear after at least some lower spells have been researched, and if you research one strategic spell it will be replaced by another strategic spell in the research book.

But other than luck, your best bets are:

* Research the quickest Strategic Spells first, so you have more chance of getting Resurrect Hero
* Cast Seek Inspiration. It's expensive at 80 Casting Points, but it will randomise the spellbook and give you a much better chance of getting Resurrect Hero.

(But research some lower level strategic spells first, otherwise the inspiration spell still won't make it appear.)

I can't tell about this precisely, but I'm sure that gaining a hero by convert/seduce/charming it will prevent you from resurrecting heroes if the number of "living" ones is greater than the allowance in the settings.

@Shine Laguna: if you can't wait for learning the Resurrect Heroes spell in your games, you may use the Resurgence settings in the RMG (it should be set on by default). This way, all your heroes and your leader gain the Resurgence unit property that makes them return at the end of a battle, provided your party wins the fight. However, this tends to make the A.I. heroes level-up faster.

Side note: if you pick creation as a specialization, you can get the resurrect spell which will let you resurrect any thing (except for machines). It's a great spell because it only costs 20-40 mana, it works in combat, and is a heck of a lot less than re-summoning a tier IV creature.

Bit of a necro (heh, you bet I am), but I finally had a chance to test it. You cannot, in fact, resurrect past the hero cap imposed at worldgen. Under this scenario, there's a little red message at the bottom of the spell in the book saying "You already have the maximum number of heroes".
