In this picture we will see a new faction couler represented in Orange. Wasteland Alliance will have their territory expand in the same way as Elven Court and Commonwealth with increasing territory and arrows for troop movements.
This mission is a prologue which will provide a different intro in comparsion to the original campaigns. The scenario will take place before everything is in order of the normal timeline of the campaign. This will be pointed out in the lore content later explaining the reasons behind the scenario.
Therefore, in order to make it a prologue many of the faction territories had to be reduced in order to provide a earlier story point. When the final world map is done, Brisska will for example be under control, so Edward can initiate his first mission.
For all scenarios featured in this campaign I made world maps to almost all scenarios except for the last scenarios so far. In the Shadow Realm campaign mission world maps will also be featured in the same way with arrows and faction movements enough logical to connect with story. However, I try to be more creative with that campaign. In Wasteland campaign I know where all the arrows are already due to the old campaigns following the same routes.
Each world map is made from a template provided by Triumph originally. I then use a paint software that can handle layers Paint.net or Gimp are good in my opinion to use for this. Then I add new faction territories with that tool. However its very time consumimg to create it, as it has some very picky painting.
I try to follow the lore as much as possible. :-) Stay tuned for more updates later.
In this diary I will discuss the progress of map content inside.
What will be different and how the map content progress further in the campaign.

In this picture the jungle of Umbura is present in a scene. This is a completly different mission in comparsion to many of the other campaign missions of AOW III. It is a prolouge mission first of all, but the big difference is how it plays out in terms of progression and mission goals. It can be considered a historic moment where the goal is set already and the player is not allowed to beat the mission normally.
It's a defense mission and the player will have to think how to play it properly. Long ago I experimented with the a.i and came to an solution how to invent this in maps. Altough, I have not worked on this campaign by far other than toying with in-game pictures to write about it. Still as the maps standing today, some are finished and some of them needs som heavily doing on the scripting front. Story-wise and terrain-wise roughly most of them lack some properly set ups and scripting. Scripting is by far the most, time consuming and difficult thing to implement on maps.
Sending a message is one thing, forcing the a.i to do something is very complicating. But I have plenty of time for it after the Shadow Realm campaign is completed.

In this picture, we have returned to the Ashen Steppes. A glimpse of the Wasteland Alliance leader is shown in a first scene where he speaks on what to do. Their is a difference here how this mission will progress, it can be said for many of the other upcoming scenarios aswell. But, you're alone in this scenario, one leader without the back-up of other heroes. The stories follows only one leader at the time, and when heroes are introduced in the campaign, you will stick with the leaders you have from the beginning. So careful management of skill progression might be a good idea.
Still some of the memorable characters from the AOW III campaign will have a impact on the story progression, much as I like choices and consequences in map making. I will make it for this campaign and this features will be dependable on story progression. I do not think I can implement the story choices more discreetly in comparsion to the original campaigns. There been obvious choices in previous campaigns, but I'm not sure if I can implent it so drastically differently. But, I give it a try later.
Next developement diary will feature some of the new characters involved in the campaign.
Cheers,

In this diary I will discuss some of the progress regarding characters.

In this picture, we have one of the many villains featured in the Wasteland storyline. A High Elf, with a past telling he was among his darker kins before and his whereabouts comes down on having a small connection with Sundren's story. As said before, many of the mission take part in a desert and tropical environment so I had reasons to develop some more characters to fit in the story more.
Some custom lore behind him: ~ He originated as the Elven court sea commander who was going to develop the navel against the southern realms. As soon as his assignment started he disappeared after meeting one of Saridas' many advisors. It rumoured he became a pirate working for his own sake. His old past tells of being a dark elf and may have a certain like for Werlac...

In this picture, we have an old man belonging to the great past of Nomads. He is certainly a memorable character from the Shadow Magic era. I will let people guess who it is. I have not fully developed a story, behind him how he connects to the story fully due to him being lying in a pile among other leaders for a while. But he will make some steps in the campaign, and I intend to let the player understand how he will connect.

In this picture, we have a hero featured in the prologue mission. She is at the very beginning of the campaign as a leader defending her clan in the siege of Umbura Jungle. Her story is regarding that her people fled from the continent of Kesh and ended up there with her people recovering from the casualties they suffered.
Some custom lore behind her: ~ When the Commonwealth were expanding their colonies and established their borders further into the desert continent. Her clan were pushed out of the continent when they attempted to resist the Commonwealths expansion. Her people were forced out of the lands and fled east were they discovered a safe haven within the old Jungle of Umbura.

In this picture, we see a glimpse of the third mission in the campaign. Same character as in the previous diary that its the same leader. I have no intention to ad the hero/leader switch which originally was found in triumphs campaigns.
When I'm not working on the Shadow Realm expansion campaign, I do some writing occasionally for the various characters and story progression for the Wasteland Campaign. I seem to find time to write down things on paper notes when I'm at work or commuting on the train or something. So most progress is all about developing ideas in general for both campaigns. I have set my aim for at least 5-6 workable maps for the Wasteland Chapters.
Next development diary will feature probably something related to map editing or glimpses of the second mission, (which was completed over a year ago) how this mission plays out without spoiling to much.
Cheers,

In this diary. I will discuss some of the scenarios how they will proceed. Two mission that completely revamps the traditional scenario design with one being a holdout mission. The other scenario having survival and exploring similar to roleplay.

Creating a defence system involving a friendly a.i. technically include some difficult scripting. In the prologue mission Jungle of Umbura, the friendly a.i actually reinforce his outposts and increase his defences automatically. The new friendly armies arriving at each chokepoint will position themselves around the outpost. Once the outpost is breached by the enemy armies, the friendly a.i will no longer have any reinforcing units arriving, but will instead try to recapture the lost outpost. Once the outpost is recaptured by the friendly a.i it will once again try to support it will new guards. If the friendly a.i lost all his outpost by the chock points, it will consider the task to recapture outposts impossible and will instead reinforce his main cities.
What about the enemies?
They will continuously work their way towards the player. They will be reinforcing their armies and will push against our defensible positions. However, the twist comes how they do their prioritizing. They will be more aggressive to the outermost location and is likely to target the friendly a.i harder.
For the most part, their only goal is to overrun the player completely, but there will be some ways to stand against their various assaults if the player stays smart and is tactical.

What if you suddenly have a mission where you won't find any enemy a.i players to defeat? No enemy with heroes or leaders to conquer?
Only a mission about exploring and your biggest enemy is the map itself. You will not have any throne cities and you won't find any cities to conquer either, you only have a small army that must last the whole map. From start to end you only have a few units, and if one dies you will have an even harder time to beat the map.
Difficulty on this mission is not impossible, but the player will not be able to turtle in his cities and recruit new units in comparison to normal missions. The mission goal is completely different and the reason is to challenge the player further.
Next diary might feature something regarding the campaign story, ideas or background of characters.
In this diary, I will give out some of the campaign ideas behind it and some of the factions roles. I've done much writing for the content during the Christmas holidays and the number of pages has increased to a substantial amount.
Also, there is information about the project in the latest issue of Stronghelm Globe for the Wasteland Campaign.

They will not have a big role in comparison to the other game villains, and mostly for reason that there is not much to tell about them. They will appear at some locations and will intervene with Wasteland Alliance. Like the original game plot of the other campaigns, it gives out clues already for their respective roles and it should be more against the similar perspective of given characters. Mostly the storyline that is originally written for Elven Court and Commonwealth should also follow the same direction as the Wasteland campaign. The reason is that the campaign should not break the rules, rather it should bend them and explain it differently with other possibilities while maintaining the story.
We can expect the return of at least some old character from the organization and new ones.
The Wasteland Alliance will intervene with the Elven Court storyline. Characters like Reskar, Groshak and Sundren will play a role in their stories. Yet, to decide to also introduce Nomlik aswell to interfere with the story. Reason being he escaped to Relekesh from Xablor at some point.
Even so, there a few other characters that will interfere somehow, by that explaining the reason behind some of the Elven colonists sent to settle in the areas of Relekesh and Ashen Steppes. New characters and old ones will appear.
The Wasteland Alliance main enemy in the campaign is, of course, the empire. They will appear in almost all scenarios and most of their generals will appear as familiar faces for the player to meet. One note to say is that they will probably be more dangerous than previously. The enemies will stress the player differently and they will now show new sides of themselves as the maps will progress differently than before. Some of the characters can die permanently and affect the story.
Lucian Van Keshbourgh is, for example, one character from the original storyline of Sundren that will be met also in this campaign. The Wasteland Alliance will meet the Commonwealth earlier than Sundren and Reskar did in the jungle of Relekesh, which mean that campaign lies one step forward in progress comparison of Edward and Sundren.
This utilizes the fact in terms of Campaign progress that Sundren succeeds, aswell will Edward in his campaign and the story will be built on the event that should have occurred. For some of the characters they may not meet “unofficially” but still, follow the same progression as they should.
This is a new faction that will play a lesser role in Age of Wonders universe. They are a group of sect followers with religious motives and will introduce themselves at some point in history.
They will have conflicts with the rest of the factions, but in general, they were wiped out long ago when the Commonwealth was established on Athla, however, some of them might have survived.
From the timeline of AOW III:
66 YC – The Frostling Kings, tired of being pushed to the fringe of the fairest lands, attempt to break the Commonwealth’s hold. After two years of war, the Frostlings are driven out of Brisska and far into the north. All subsequent diplomatic overtures are met with disastrous results. They refuse all contact with the Commonwealth, barricading themselves in a land of permanent ice and snow. From this time on, none of the people known as Frostlings hold any lands of significance within the Commonwealth.
The Frostlings were not introduced in the original campaign of Elven Court and Commonwealth. However, Nomads in the campaign of Shadow Magic met some ice cream selling Frostlings in the second scenario of Ke-nan campaign. I do not believe they will do the same in this campaign, but they might make an appearance somewhere. With a reasonable explanation.
They will not appear in this campaign and there are no stories planned around the Halflings. I made some characters for them with desert themed orientation to fit them in. But I cannot fit them inside the story really.
They will make some smaller appearance in the game. Only for story purpose along with old Nomad faction.
For the next diary, it will probably feature something regarding the map creation from level editing how to variate the terrain of a tropical environment in every mission to avoid the same over and over. Start a campaign only making content with 80% of tropical and desert requires some variation it achieved with various tricks to make the terrain feel unique.
