I figure you need to:
A) Scout the level as much as possible before attacking anything.
B) If a death protection is handy, use it along with the Whupaz potion on the boss at the lowest character level possible
C) Destroy the 3 sticks to follow up
D) Destroy enemies while leveling, as per usual
I've been able to whittle the boss down to about 200-300hp, then I run out of potions, run out of god boons, and wind up with no way of leveling beyond this. I cannot figure out which god to use, nor how to successfully best this terrible boss creature. Any further help would be appreciated.
P.S. I've found Earthmother to be terrific in the first stage. Extra hits of Green Blood, along with entanglement is life-saving. To make level 1 easier, I've been carrying a +2 sword rather than a preserverance badge as a prep.
Ignore the sticks until it's time to fight the boss. You'll be perma-cursed, but the other debuffs don't matter so much because you'll be superstrong at low levels due to all of the charms you've got on you. Beating level +2 enemies should be easy at first. When you're ready to fight, hit him with Whupaz, kill all of the sticks, and now you only have 750 HP to fight through. It should only take a few potions at most.
This is exactly what I would've written :) The level is easiest to beat if you're lucky to find a useful God/ess (I love Earthmother here for IMAWAL + Entanglement), but you can do it in less optimal conditions.
That's terrible :(
- What level should my character be before engaging the boss? (WHUPAZ and sticks are a given)
- How do I keep my healthpoints up when fighting him? Do I bother with fireball or not?
- Do any specific glyphs make this fight easier? Any specific gods?
- Should I care about being cursed?
- Should I explore black space after attacking the boss (regenerating the boss)?
I've been able to get him as low as about 200hp, but that's using all my potions. My main problem is that I only have enough hp to deal a single physical strike. This means that even with a level up mid-fight, I'm still a good 6+ attacks away from possible victory. Once again, any help is appreciated.
Lordatog, I definitely feel for you. I think taking some time off is a good idea. That's what I did with Teleglitch for about 2 months. Then, my next attempt, I went in and destroyed the boss having never faced him before.
You'll want to have explored most of the level when you start the fight. Whupaz him and kill the sticks when you can take a hit. What you want to do next is level up without exploring, fighting the toughest monsters you can afford to take on. Each level, just before levelling up, hit the boss with any life or mana you have left. So, until you get as high as you can, you want to focus on the minions, and only hit the boss with what you can spare. Once you get your level as high as the available enemies allow, you should be strong enough to regen fight the boss at least a little. It's possible to beat him using no potions at all, but it's very unlikely unless you have a god that can heal you (Dracul, JJ, EM, Mystera. GG is not good, because you have no room for beads). The many curse stacks you'll have are irrelevant.
Are you heading into 2-2 with a full inventory of charms? Here's what you want at the start of the level.
1 stack of health potions
1 stack of mana potions
1 WHUPAZ potion
1 compressed BURNDAYRAZ glyph
1 stack of courage juice potions (optional)
1 prep item (I used Dwarven Gauntlets, but other items work too. Namtar's Ward is probably pretty good)
20 charms and/or wisp gems
If you don't begin 2-2 able to take out all level 2s and many level 3s easily, you're doing it wrong. Killing strong monsters from the start is essential to 2-2, those debuffs will eat you alive otherwise.
I barely managed to best the second level (I've been struggling massively here), only through exploring all black space at level 4, using one death protection, and then WHUPAZ, sticks, and level-ups was I able to get a few hits in. From there, 3 hits of Blood Tithe by way of Dracul and continued use of death protection was I able to achieve victory. In the process, I spent all my mana potions and health potions, using a few extra boons of Blood Swell for good measure. The reason I attacked the boss at level 4 was because I actually had just enough popcorn remaining to remove all my curse stacks before using Blood Swell.
Oddly, I've been finding more luck with Jehora Jeheyu on the first level lately, even though I had a preference for using Earthmother's Entanglement to get a few free hits of BURNDAYRAZ.
Any tips for the third stage?
If you're lucky, the easiest way to beat the boss of 2-2 without using any potions is with APHEELSIK. It's also really useful for part 1. I would recommend saving blackspace for the boss in any case. I forget how much damage it does, but I *think* you can do some regen-fighting even without APHEELSIK, which should help with saving potions. Definitely use Courage Juice when you need it to level up efficiently, even if you're trying to save it for this strategy; the amount of gold you'll still have should tell you whether you can spare some.
I usually prepare Jehora (as recomended to me by a forum user over at the QCF forums). Chaos Avatar is a full Corrosion wipe, and Boost Health is helpful in minimizing the pain of the corrosion for longer.
Hopefully this helps! Haven't been playing much or making videos lately, I hope to get back to it soon :)
- Prepping Jehora Jeheyu is worth it for the first level, even with the inventory slot penalty. Worshipping the god from the start, I'm now able to beat the first level on a consistent basis, with only 1-3 health potions used up.
- I kept trying to use the Alchemists scroll strategy suggested by Schachter. I've had no success. My best run involved prepping Elven Boots thereby making the first and second levels far easier. I also found they helped with CYDSTEPP casting and regen fighting to save mana potions in the third level.
I keep trying and I refuse to give up. However, I'm running into a bit of a mental wall here. Near as I can tell, the second level is where I'm failing, using too many potions and barely making it to level 3. My current strategy involves besting level 1 prepping Elven Boots, Jehora Jeheyu, Black Market (for the extra gold), a WHUPAZ potion, health and mana potions, and burn salve, as well as a preseverence badge, Fireball Magnet, and Apothecary. Once the level 1 boss is dead, I purchase a health and mana potion from the remaining shops, save the WEYTWUT glyph for aid in level 2, and take all the trinkets I can fit in my inventory (prioritizing the +1hp and damage ones).
Back when I brought the Alchemist Scroll with me I had great success saving mana potions on level 2 if I happened to encounter Dracul. I'd use the WHUPAZ-stick attack deal at about level 5, then level-up on a popcorn enemy, worship Dracul with as many Tithes as I can, and continually alternate between attacking the boss and collecting health from blood pools until there were none remaining. Then I would use Blood Swell for the remaining attacks, made all the better if I could desecrate one of the other Gods at little risk (without a major penalty, such as Binlor). The trouble with this strategy now, is that I don't have enough health to take multiple hits of Blood Tithe from Dracul without lowering my health below the damage inflicted by the boss (meaning I can't survive a hit at full health). The only partial way I've had luck is to take only a single hit of Blood Tithe, Blood Curse (taking me to level 7), and a hit or two of Blood Hunger. The Blood Hunger, if I'm lucky can help me survive a few standard enemy attacks to level up again, or at least overheal me to the point I can survive a hit. Earthmother always consumes the majority of my mana potions. Hence, I have little luck taking the boss down with fireball casting.
I've had little trouble regen-fighting and destroying all bosses except for Lord Gobb. I have yet to beat him a single time in level 3.
If you have an alternate strategy, or can see what I'm doing wrong, I'd appreciate your advice.
While I've yet to try any of the triple challenges, this line stood out for me. Isn't Earthmother one of the more mana-friendly gods, aside from Mystera? Clearance, after all. So how does Earthmother make you use up your mana potions?
I'm guessing it's from having to complement the clearance boost due to fireballs costing 8 mana? I was wondering about that line too.
In any case, SexyPanther, just in case you haven't seen those (though I suspect you did), another member of the QCF Forums has used the Elven boots successfully and beaten part 3 as a Blutupowa caster. Personally, for Lord Gobb I used Pissorf and took both him and another boss (I think Jörgunmandr) at the same time. Another user also suggested the Avatar's Codex, which makes sense since it makes up for your low health. I suspect that strategy would involve mass conversion in the second stage for as much mana resources as possible, but I haven't tried it.
I think the most common refrain for the challenge, though, is simply to save as *many* potions as possible, though I'm sure you've realized this already. Sorry I haven't made a video, I haven't played Desktop Dungeons (or video games in general) much these days as I've been very busy, and haven't had the concentration I need to make videos. Writing this up has made me want to get back to it though :) Maybe later today or Wednesday, if I can find the time.
Keep at it! I promise it's doable. Back when I was attempting the triple quests (quests 2 and 3 took *many* attempts), when I got frustrated at them I would just go and play around with the Vicious dungones, trying to beat them with different classes. I think doing that helped me improve my skill... In any case, bashing your head against something repeatedly is often less productive than taking a break and coming back to it later. I dunno whether that applies to you, but sometime I personally need to have that reminded to me, so I'm throwing that out there :)
