Of course we don't know if they are legit. And there is no point in getting hopes up that they are. But it's interesting to imagine and if it ends up legit then great.
Exactly that. I'm very skeptical that anything will come from this but wouldn't it be great?
It's a pity that *so much* of the game was server-side. What I wouldn't give if even as little as the training room (and my heroes) were available just from the client without needing a server ...
He's going to talk to his legal aid and see if they can do that. The last i heard trion worlds had the rights and where not doing anything with it at all. I know champions of titan used the basic source code to build there game so its not like it isn't happening else where. Ill keep everyone informed. He wants to bring this back really bad and i don't blame him. He is talking about doing it anyway even with the dmc notice.
Um how did Gamigo even know what he was doing or even who he was? I'll be honest, this sounds like you are trolling people here as there's no reason why they would find out. All your friend needs to do is keep his server down to a local network only. Nothing would be sent out during testing and he could locate any packets it is trying to send out that Gamigo might, I'm not sure how, detect.
Honestly, just leak the code, via usenet or such, if you have it. Just be careful that it isn't traceable. And honestly, all that dedicated emulation coders need is the network packet structure and the encryption keys and such. Sure it's a ton of work, but people generally have to do that for most private servers in the beginning.
As far as legal goes. Trion went out of business and sold all of their code/assets to Gamigo. While using their server code is riskier, emulating the backend and using the same packets/encryption is less so. As gamigo has less claim and it would be more up to Disney/Marvel most likely. And I don't see how it's illegal to work on it for himself, just distributing it.
And if someone ever gets a working standalone emulator or server out there, people will always be able to find it and at least install it locally for the nostalgia.
frodo is right, something isn't adding up here.
How about moving things to a discord channel in case this thread gets wiped?
