Not entirely, but the game did collapse as soon as he jumped on board and tried to take the game to console. However, it wasn't just one thing that killed the game, it was a multitude of events, all of which contributed to one sole outcome.

The beginning of the end happened, as soon as Brevik walked out and started work on Path of Exile. He was the lead developer of MHO. Without him, we wouldn't even have had the game. When you lose the lead developer, well... You know that it's the beginning of the end. Brevik walked out, shortley before the BUE was released, and the push was made to bring the game to console. I don't think Brevik ever really explained why he walked out. I like to think though, that it was a moral decision over disagreements over price structures, and the direction that the game was heading in following the move to console, and then...

The BUE happened, which also contributed towards killing the game. The game lost half it's player base, vet and otherwise, over night on PC. The thing is that the Biggest Update Ever didn't work on the console player base either. When the game lost half those players, the business also lost half the profit. What is the point of spending money on Heroes, when your not engaged by the gameplay, and feel like all the update has done, is nerf existing characters into the ground? That's essentially what the BUE did, but, as usual, the hype train was strong with Asros ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and again, as per usual, the BUE failed to live up to it's expectations. In one update, the developers managed to lose half the PC and Console player base, and when the game lost half of those players, the business also lost half the profit that those players generated for the business.

Online Only Games that are dependent on sales through a micro transaction store to survive, like MHO was, can only survive for as long as the player base keeps spending money. Once that dries up, it's done, it's a dead game. It's just a matter of time. That update will always be seen, in my eyes, as being a major part of the reason why the game died so quickly. Less than a year after the BUE was released, the game was shut down. The best thing that the developers could have done, was roll back the update to pre-bue, but the developers made the decision to keep going, and in the process, their decision killed the game. It was a gamble which didn't pay off for anyone. The result being, we all lost.

Then the scandal with Von ♥♥♥♥ Boy and the sexual harrassment allegations happened, and it was that scandal which was the straw that broke the cammels back.

Still, part of me feels that Disneys response was a little over dramatic. They could have handed the project to another developer studio, one which had a better reputation, but between Brevik walking out, Asros's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over the hype behind the BUE which failed in every possible way to deliver, losing half the player base over night, in a single update, the push to console, and Von ♥♥♥♥ Boy being unable to keep his ♥♥♥♥ in his pants, it was innevitable that the game was going to die.

EDIT:

Sorry for the necro.

It has been over a year since I last came onto these forums.

I didn't realise that they were still up.
